Now I’m bringing that same curiosity into cybersecurity. 🔐
For a long time, I wondered if pivoting into cyber meant starting over.
It doesn’t.
I’ve learned that so much of what I already know translates: logs are data stories, threat detection is pattern recognition, and the ability to communicate what you find matters just as much as the technical skills.

I’m officially certified! 🎉
On August 15, 2026, I passed the ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) exam. My certification is now official, and my ISC2 membership is active. 🛡️
That milestone means a lot, but it’s definitely not the end of the journey. Next comes more learning, more Splunk, more data stories, more projects — and yes, more certifications. 😊

Transitioning from data analytics to cybersecurity has been a rewarding and eye-opening experience for me. Initially, I was concerned that starting in cybersecurity might require abandoning all the skills I had built over a decade in data. However, I quickly discovered that many core competencies like pattern recognition, interpreting logs, and storytelling with data work seamlessly between the two fields. One of the most valuable lessons I learned is how cybersecurity investigations mirror data analysis projects—I analyze logs and anomalies, much like I searched for trends in datasets before. Tools like Splunk have become my go-to for digging into security data, allowing me to trace events and identify potential threats in real time. Getting certified as ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity solidified my knowledge and boosted my confidence, proving that my data background gave me a solid foundation to build on. But beyond certifications, I also focus on developing soft skills which are crucial in cybersecurity—communicating findings clearly and collaborating with teams to respond effectively to security incidents. For those considering a career pivot, my advice is to embrace your existing skills as assets rather than obstacles. Learning cybersecurity does not mean starting from zero; it's about applying your analytical mindset in new ways. Also, engage with hands-on projects and labs which are vital to deepen your understanding and build a portfolio that showcases your capabilities. Lastly, joining communities and sharing your journey publicly—like I do with DataSec Chronicles—can offer support, motivation, and valuable networking. If you’re torn between data and cyber or interested in both, you're not alone. Building a unique intersection of skills opens exciting career paths in this evolving tech landscape.
