Before You Say You “Did Nothing” This Summer… 👀
I recently did a 15-week audit of my own progress moving from data analytics toward cybersecurity.
And it reminded me of something:
Sometimes progress is hard to see when you’re standing inside it.
So before summer officially gets filed away, try your own audit. 🔎
Look at:
✓ What you actually finished
✓ What you know now that you didn’t know in May
✓ What changed from your original plan
✓ The unexpected wins that weren’t on the list
✓ What you kept coming back to
✓ What you want to keep, change, stop, or start this fall
And then ask yourself:
Am I actually standing in the same place I was at the beginning of summer?
You might be surprised by the answer.
My summer definitely didn’t go exactly according to the roadmap I created.
But when I pulled the evidence?
I had moved. A lot. 💜
Progress doesn’t have to look perfect to be real.
Evidence > vibes.

When I first came across the idea of a summer audit, I was skeptical about how much insight a look back over a few months could really offer. But after trying it myself, I realized it’s surprisingly effective at revealing real progress—even when the bigger picture feels stagnant. What helped me most was breaking down the audit into clear steps: listing completed tasks, new knowledge gained, unexpected wins, and habits I maintained. For example, I tracked small certifications and projects I didn't expect to finish. These counts gave me tangible proof of moving forward, even if my plans didn’t fully pan out. Another key moment was honestly comparing my original plan to what actually happened. Sometimes our best growth comes from detours we didn’t anticipate. Recognizing that change can help reduce frustration and refocus energy on what truly matters next. From a career perspective, this audit approach encourages continuous learning and flexibility. Whether you’re switching fields, improving skills, or just trying to balance work and life better, the evidence-based mindset keeps you motivated. It’s a reminder that progress doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be real. For anyone thinking their summer was "nothing special," I suggest trying this audit exercise soon. It might surprise you how much you actually accomplished or learned. By highlighting these often-overlooked wins, you can boost confidence and set intentional goals for the coming season. Remember, growth is a collection of many small steps, not always visible day-to-day. Your summer may look different than planned, but with a structured audit, those differences become proof that you’re moving forward.
