Why my savings account never grew 🥺

For the longest time, I thought I just sucked at saving moneys.

But the real problem that I wasn't planning for future expenses ahead of time. Every "unexpected" expense ended up coming out of my savings account, and I kept restarting over and over again.

Once I started budgeting by paycheck and planning ahead for things like car expenses, travel, birthday, and home costs, my saving finally started staying in my account.

Getting intentional with my money changed everything for me.

... Read moreI used to struggle with keeping my savings balance growing because I treated savings as whatever money was left after spending. This approach made my savings account feel like a revolving door — I'd save some money, then unexpected costs like car repairs, birthdays, or trips would force me to dip into savings and reset my progress. The turning point came when I started using a budgeting app that let me set specific savings goals for different categories, each with its own target amount and deadline. For example, I created separate funds for medical expenses, travel, self-care, and car maintenance. This way, every payday, the app would tell me exactly how much to allocate to each fund to stay on track. By preparing for these "non-emergency" but inevitable expenses ahead of time, the money was already set aside, so when the costs came up, I didn't have to touch my emergency savings or borrow from other funds. This system reduced financial stress significantly. Another key insight was to prioritize saving first before spending. Instead of saving leftovers, I treated saving as a fixed part of my budget just like rent or utilities. Planning paycheck by paycheck and setting firm goals made saving feel achievable instead of a vague intention. This approach helped me save over $3,600 and steadily grow my savings without the usual setbacks. If you find yourself restarting savings often, consider setting detailed goals for upcoming known expenses and automating saving amounts toward those goals. Being intentional and proactive transformed my money mindset and can do the same for you.

The image displays the title "Your Guide to a High Yield Savings Account" over a background of bundled hundred-dollar bills inside a car, emphasizing financial growth.
The image defines a High Yield Savings Account (HYSA) as a savings account that pays 4-5%+ interest at online banks, significantly more than the 0.01% at regular banks.
The image illustrates the power of compounding interest, showing that $5,000 in a normal savings account earns $0.50 annually, while in a HYSA, it earns $200-$250 annually.
Why You NEED a High Yield Savings Account 💸
If your money is just sitting in a regular savings account earning pennies… it’s basically losing value 💀. A High Yield Savings Account (HYSA) is a savings account that actually PAYS you. Instead of 0.01% interest at a traditional bank, many online banks are offering 4–5% interest right now.
