Narcissistic Abuse Survival- the aftermath

Relationship

💗 Type of Relationship: Abusive- one emotional, one both emotional and physical

💗 Red flags: Love-bombing, Learn your INTUITION!! (for the ones in the back, your body always knows!), falling in love too fast, idealizing you up front, isolation, talking trash about friends, family, small put-downs disguised as jokes, again, listen to your I.N.T.U.I.T.I.O.N!!!

💗 What I Learned: To listen to my intuition/body. Who taught me that type of treatment was ok growing up. That I have needs that matter too. Its ok to piss people off if it means having boundaries. Its better to be alone than in a dangerous relationship!!!!! Things always get worse. Abusers do not change.

... Read moreRecovering from narcissistic abuse involves more than just leaving the abusive situation—it requires rebuilding your sense of safety and trust in yourself. Trauma from such relationships deeply impacts how we think, feel, and make decisions. It can cause our nervous system to remain on high alert, leading to fear-based choices and difficulty trusting others or even ourselves. One key lesson I’ve learned is the importance of tuning into my body's signals and intuition. Our bodies remember what the mind sometimes tries to forget. For example, gut feelings of discomfort or unease are crucial warnings that shouldn’t be ignored. In abusive relationships, tactics like love-bombing and idealization often mask deeper issues. Recognizing manipulation disguised as affection or jokes helps prevent further harm. Additionally, trauma often rewires our brain, shifting focus from logical thinking to survival instincts. This means decision making can feel overwhelming or impulsive. It is vital to practice grounding techniques—such as mindfulness or deep breathing—and allow yourself time before making big decisions. Writing down pros and cons or consulting with a trusted friend can aid clarity. Setting clear, firm boundaries even when it upsets others is a sign of self-respect, not selfishness. It’s okay to prioritize your needs and safety; in fact, it’s necessary for healing. Being alone is far better than remaining in a relationship that damages your well-being. Remember: abusers rarely change, so investing in your self-care and seeking trauma-informed support can facilitate recovery. If you or someone you know is struggling with the aftermath of narcissistic abuse, reaching out to support groups or mental health professionals skilled in trauma care can be transformative. Healing journeys differ, but reclaiming your power means honoring your feelings and experiences, acknowledging that abuse is never your fault, and understanding that lasting peace comes from within.
