Face Painting Vi’s Tattoo
One thing wild about the process of doing this was learning what my personal limitations of reach are! The tattoo is a lot more detailed, and you could probably tell from the unfinished middle cog where I was unable to keep adding details due to reach 😅
That being said, if you’re ever doing a large tattoo or design on yourself with facepaint, here are some tips I have:
1.) Section the parts you know is in your reach. I started off with my arms and then works more towards my back from there, taking turns with which side of my body I was on.
2.) Draw a reference line before beginning. Just one lightly painted line from the shoulder cog down to where you want it to end to act as your middle line will help you have a base to stem off from. For me, it also made it easier to section the parts into smaller sections to make it easier to replicate.
3.) Patience. I was bouncing between both my left and right hand and painting the details with a brush. It WILL get tedious, but if you take your time and work with the sections it will make it easier.
4.) Reference image. It’s obvious to have one at the ready, but I recommend pinpointing which is the left and right side of the character and seeing if you need to reflect the reference image before starting. If you find yourself looking at the mirror more than your body, reflecting the image on your viewing screen of choice will make it so there’s less steps in turning sections around in your mind before drawing them.
5.) Setting and Sealing. Since I had a jacket going on and off, of trick that I learned for setting the facepaint is using hair spray and baby powder. The hairspray sticks everything down while the baby powder takes away the shine.
Okay, so while tackling Vi's super intricate, mechanical-style tattoo was an epic project for me (and seriously, those detailed patterns on your back are no joke!), I know not everyone is looking for such a massive challenge. Prime Placement: For kids, hands, cheeks, and forearms are ideal canvases. They're easy to reach and show off! A small design doesn't need much space. No need for a pink wig to rock these fun temporary tattoos! Keep it Simple: Resist the urge to add too many intricate patterns. The beauty of these designs is their simplicity. A few well-placed lines or a solid shape often looks better than trying to cram in too much detail. You can use sponges for a solid color base and a fine brush for outlines. Reference, but Simplify: While I relied on a detailed reference image for Vi's tattoo, for these easier designs, you can look up simple cartoon illustrations or clip art for inspiration. No need to reflect images in a mirror or worry about complex sections! Patience (Still Applies!): Even for simple designs, take your time. A steady hand makes a big difference. And remember, it's about having fun, not perfection! Gentle Removal: These temporary tattoos should come off easily with mild soap and warm water. No scrubbing needed!
