Want to customize your homepage but don’t know how? Let me help! It’s actually not as difficult as it looks.
Before we start, there are a few things you’re going to need.
1. Shortcuts app (This is already installed on your iPhone.)
2. Widgetsmith (Free trail and the it costs $1.99 a month.)
3. Pinterest (For background photos and app icons.)
4. Canva (This one is optional, but you can create your own app icons here.)
I also highly recommend updating your phone if an update is available. Just to make sure everything goes smoothly!
Starting off, you will need to clear everything off of your homepage. Make sure you are hitting “Remove from home screen” instead of delete.
Now, head over to Pinterest and find a background you like. This is what you will base your theme on. For example, I typed in “pink glitter aesthetic”. Next, search for app icons that fit your aesthetic. For example, “Pink glitter app icons for instagram.”
Head over to Widgetsmith and play around with the options until you find something you like. Once you’ve created a widget, go to your home page and long press the screen. Tap the + symbol in the upper left hand corner. Scroll down to Widgetsmith and tap on the widget size you’d like to install.
The next part is a little trickier, but it gets a lot easier with practice.
You’ll need to open the shortcuts app and select “All shortcuts.” Tap the + symbol in the upper right hand corner. On the top of the screen, select “New shortcut” and click on “Rename”. Name your widget according to the app you’re wanting to replace.
Next, select “Open app” and then hit the “App” button in blue. Select the app you want to work with.
Finally, in the middle of the screen on the very bottom, tap the I with the circle around it. Select “Add to Home Screen” then select the icon next to the name of your new widget. From here, you will be able to select a photo for your app. All you have to do now is tap “Add” in the upper right hand corner and you’re finished!
Repeat the process until you’ve went through all the apps you want to keep on your Home Screen. (:

Speaking of icons, while Pinterest is amazing for finding pre-made ones, if you really want to unleash your creativity, Canva is your best friend for unique app icons and widget backgrounds! I've been experimenting with it to create truly unique icons that perfectly match my wallpapers. For example, for my 'pink glitter aesthetic' theme, I'd open Canva, choose an 'Instagram Story' blank template, search for 'glitter backgrounds,' add a simple white shape, and then search for an icon element like a tiny camera for my photo apps. You can even add custom text! This way, every single icon is perfectly on-brand for your theme. For widgets, Canva can help you design custom backgrounds or overlays that you can then import into Widgetsmith as a photo widget. It's a game-changer for truly personalized designs! When it comes to Widgetsmith, don't just stop at the basic photo or time widgets! Dive into the different data sources. I love using the 'Date & Time' widget with a custom font and background color that complements my theme. Or try the 'Calendar' widget to see your schedule at a glance, styled just how you like it. For a truly cohesive layout, think about balance. If you have a large widget on one side, maybe a couple of smaller app icon rows on the other to keep it from feeling too heavy. I always try to group related apps and widgets together. For instance, all my social media apps might be near a small widget showing my daily steps, while productivity apps are near a calendar widget. Don't be afraid to try different arrangements! Sometimes, simply moving a widget from the top to the bottom can totally change the feel of your screen. One last tip I learned through trial and error: consistency is key! Once you pick a theme, like my 'pink glitter' vibe, try to stick with that color palette and style across your icons, widgets, and wallpaper. It makes everything look so polished, almost like a magazine spread. And don't forget to periodically review your layout. Our needs change, and so should our home screens!
