Sloppy John’s
2 lbs ground beef
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 onion, diced
Sauce:
1 cup ketchup
½ cup tomato sauce
2 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp yellow mustard
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
¼ cup water or beef broth
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
½ tsp smoked paprika
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
Cook the ground beef with the peppers and onion until the meat is done, then drain. Add all of your sauce ingredients, stir everything together and let it simmer uncovered for about 10–15 minutes.
If you want it a little thinner, just add more water or beef broth until it’s how you like it. And get all of that on a bun! 🙌🏽 #fy #easyrecipe #recipes #motherhood #homemade
Sloppy John sandwiches are a fantastic choice when you want a hearty, comforting meal that doesn’t require a lot of fuss in the kitchen. I’ve often relied on this recipe when hosting casual get-togethers or feeding my family on busy weeknights. The beauty of this dish lies in its balance of sweet, tangy, and smoky flavors created by the sauce — combining ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and apple cider vinegar. Using both green and red bell peppers along with onions adds a delightful crunch and freshness that complements the rich beef filling. Personally, I like to sauté the vegetables until just tender to preserve some texture, then mix in the cooked ground beef for a well-coordinated flavor profile. One useful tip is to simmer the sauce uncovered; this helps to thicken the mixture and intensify the flavors. If you find the sauce too thick, gradually adding beef broth or water allows you to reach your preferred consistency without diluting taste. I’ve also experimented with adding a touch of smoked paprika to enhance the smoky chili notes, which really elevates the overall profile. For an extra twist, you might sprinkle some grated cheddar cheese over the filling once it’s on the bun—melting it slightly adds richness. This recipe is very forgiving and adaptable. You can easily swap ground beef for ground turkey or chicken as a leaner alternative, though the savory sauce is key to keeping the flavors vibrant. It’s a great way to enjoy a homemade classic that satisfies without spending hours cooking. In my experience, the Sloppy John sandwiches are best served on soft, fresh buns that can hold all that delicious filling without falling apart. Pair them with a simple side like coleslaw or roasted vegetables for a complete, crowd-pleasing meal. This dish truly epitomizes comfort food made easy, perfect for feeding a hungry family or a gathering of friends with minimal prep and maximum flavor.
