I Had to Get Out of the “School” Mindset

Two weeks into homeschooling and I’ve already had to unlearn a whole lot. 😂 I caught myself trying to recreate public school right here at my kitchen table and that’s not why we chose this. I don’t have to follow a certain curriculum just because that’s what we were taught school is “supposed” to look like. I don’t have to cram every subject into every day. And I don’t have to make my kids spend hours learning things they have absolutely no interest in just because somebody somewhere decided they should. If one of my kids wants to learn calculus, we’ll learn calculus. 😂 But be for real, when was the last time you used the Pythagorean theorem in your everyday life? Because I’ll wait. 🤣 I KNOW this subject gets people going, so I’m not even trying to convince anybody to homeschool or tell anybody how to educate their children. I’m just figuring out what works for MINE. And so far? We love this. Royce, my 3rd grader, loves reading, writing and art, so we lean into that. Jr., my 8th grader, is interested in finance and business management right now, so I’m giving him the space and resources to explore it. And as their interests change, what we’re learning can change right along with them.

I think the biggest thing I’ve learned so far is that I have to stop asking myself, “Is this what school is supposed to look like?”

Because this is OUR homeschool.

And breaking free from all those rules I thought we had to follow has probably been the best part so far. 💜📚 #homeschool #homeschooling #bigfamily #motherhood #momsoftiktok

Homeschooling isn't for the faint of heart. I admire you Jess for tackling this for your children. You have control of their safety and that's a concern we all share as parents. Much love and prayers 🥰🙏🏻
