Rest ≠ Lazy
Most people think overfunctioning is about being helpful.
Or productive.
Or Type A.
But underneath it? It’s a trauma adaptation.
It’s what your nervous system learned when unpredictability was constant, love was conditional, and silence meant something was coming.
Overfunctioning is survival.
It’s stored in the body.
And it has nothing to do with being strong.
This post breaks down the real nervous system science behind overfunctioning. Not mindset hacks. Not toxic positivity. Not “just say no” advice.
Real regulation requires real understanding.
And your nervous system deserves more than shame or burnout.

This post has given me such clarity! I have been searching within…gone to therapy…( which has always been at least somewhat helpful, but this time not when I can’t answer my own questions or the questions that could help lead me to the answer, I was baffled) tried a support group, only to find myself in the same spot as therapy and kept circling and felt shame and guilt because I didn’t feel part of the group because I was lost and could not still figure out why, slowly over time and still to this day, I work on things in projects to complete an utter exhaustion while doing everything in my household because I don’t even want to ask. When I hit the wall in my repetitive cycle and sleep for almost 24 hours I wake up feeling anxious as if I’m being lazy and I better get to work. Thank you thank you for posting and sharing this.
