How to patch test skincare the right way from your board certified Derm

Before you apply a new skincare product all over your face, patch test first!

As a board-certified dermatologist, I recommend patch testing new skincare especially if you have sensitive or reactive skin. It can help you identify potential irritation or an allergic reaction before using the product more widely.

How to patch test properly:

• Apply a small amount to an inconspicuous area, such as the inner forearm or behind the ear.

• Use the product as directed and avoid introducing other new products at the same time.

• Continue observing the area over several days for redness, itching, burning, swelling, bumps, or a rash.

• If you develop significant irritation, stop using the product and wash the area.

• Remember: a home patch test doesn’t guarantee that a product won’t react on your face.

... Read moreWhen trying out new skincare products, patch testing is an essential step I always recommend based on my own experience. Applying a small amount to an inconspicuous area, such as the inner forearm or behind the ear, lets you monitor your skin’s reaction before risking your entire face. It’s important to use the product exactly as it will be applied later—no mixing with other new products during this time—so you can identify if any irritation or allergy is from that specific formula. Patience is key: some reactions can take several days to appear, so check frequently for symptoms like redness, itching, burning, swelling, or rashes. If you notice any significant irritation, wash the area immediately and stop using the product. Keep in mind that even with patch testing, a product might still cause a reaction when applied to facial skin, but this method greatly reduces the chance of widespread issues. Also, remember that sensitive or reactive skin types benefit most from this precaution. From my own trial and error with different skincare products, this simple testing technique has saved me from a lot of discomfort and embarrassment. Overall, for anyone new to a product or brand, patch testing is a practical, dermatologist-endorsed way to protect your skin and keep your routine safe and effective.
