You Can Be Kind Without Abandoning Yourself. 🖤

I used to think being a good person meant always being understanding.

Give another chance.

Let it go.

Keep the peace.

Be the bigger person.

But somehow, being the “bigger person” kept requiring me to become smaller.

I’ve learned that I can have a good heart and boundaries.

I can forgive you and still not give you the same access.

I can wish you well and still walk away.

I can love people and choose myself too.

Being kind doesn’t require self-abandonment. 🤎

You’re allowed to protect the person you’re becoming.

... Read moreOne powerful realization I’ve come to appreciate is that kindness does not require sacrificing your own well-being. Often, we think being kind means tolerating behavior that hurts us or keeping silent just to maintain peace. But real kindness starts with kindness toward yourself. Setting boundaries is crucial—it’s about defining what you are willing to accept and what protects your peace. This can mean saying no to repeated hurt or choosing to distance yourself from toxic relationships. For instance, I once tried to forgive a friend who consistently disregarded my feelings, hoping to keep the friendship alive. However, I realized forgiveness did not equate to giving unlimited access to my emotions or tolerance of hurtful behavior. Choosing to take a step back was an act of kindness toward myself. I found that "outgrowing people" can feel challenging but is sometimes necessary for personal growth. This doesn’t mean harshly cutting ties but rather valuing your well-being first and recognizing when a relationship no longer supports your growth. Choosing yourself means prioritizing your emotional health. It’s about nurturing your needs and acknowledging that you are worthy of respect and peace. Protecting the person you are becoming involves nurturing your self-worth and not shrinking yourself to fit others’ expectations. In practice, this looks like communicating your limits clearly, forgiving but not forgetting, and lovingly walking away when needed—all while maintaining a compassionate heart. The balance between kindness and boundaries might feel tricky at first, but it ultimately leads to healthier relationships and greater self-respect. Remember, kindness is not weakness. It’s strength paired with wisdom. "You can set boundaries. Protect your peace. Outgrow people. Choose yourself. All at the same time." This powerful mantra reminds us that protecting our peace and being kind are not mutually exclusive, but complementary parts of a balanced and fulfilling life.
