Here's a fun little 1 day itinerary in NYC

9/11 Memorial Park and museum.

Take the Staten Island ferry for wonderful views of downtown Manhattan.

Times Square.

Walk the Highline ending at the Edge and Hudson Yards.

Have something for lunch/early supper that you can't get at home. I come from a fairly homogenous city and gorge myself on Mexican/LatAm and Korean food everytime I go to NYC.

A few things to consider:

Take the NJ Transit train to NY Penn Station. Newark Liberty airport has a little monorail that goes between terminals and connects with NJ Transit. Buy your tickets as you exit the airport. It'll take about 30 minutes and you won't have to worry about the notorious NYC traffic to get into Manhattan.

There's no temporary luggage storage at Newark or Penn Station. I really don't recommend that you drag carry-on baggage everywhere. NYC is too crowded and if you are planning to get around on the subway, there are a lot of stairs. I would suggest either having personal bags only or using an app like Bounce, LuggageHero, or Nannybag to see where you could store luggage, but it will eat into your limited time.

Download CityMapper for directions. Google Maps also works well, but sometimes gets confused in very congested areas.

Use the facilities whenever you can. Absolutely do not trust public washrooms, and many of the McDonalds or Starbucks washrooms can be iffy. If you're in a bind, go to a restaurant or bar with over 20 seats and ask if you can use their facilities. Generally, they must allow free use of their washrooms subject to some conditions. It would be courteous to leave a tip.

2025/2/13 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so you've got just one day in the Big Apple? It sounds crazy, but with a solid plan, you can truly experience some of New York's magic! My itinerary already covers the must-sees, but I wanted to add a few more personal tips to make your whirlwind trip even smoother and more memorable, especially when it comes to getting around and soaking in the unique vibes. Foodie Adventures on the Go: Quick Bites & Local Flavors You know I mentioned gorging on Mexican/LatAm and Korean food? New York is a culinary playground, even for a day trip! For quick, delicious Mexican, look for a 'taqueria' – small, often cash-only spots with incredible tacos. My personal favorite areas for these are in the East Village or Chelsea. If you're craving Korean, grab some street food like a hotteok or fish cakes in Koreatown (around 32nd Street near Penn Station) for a speedy but authentic taste. Don't be afraid to try a classic New York slice of pizza from a local pizzeria for lunch – it's fast, cheap, and undeniably NYC. Grabbing food from a deli or bodegas is also a quintessentially New York experience for a quick, affordable bite. Navigating the Subway Like a Pro: My Best Transit Hacks The article mentioned CityMapper, which is a lifesaver, but let's talk more subway strategy. You'll likely use the subway multiple times. Instead of buying individual tickets, grab a MetroCard at any station. You can load it with a pay-per-ride option. For a single day, loading about $10-$15 should cover most of your rides. Remember, you swipe the MetroCard once to enter, so no need to swipe again when transferring to another line within the system. Also, pay attention to 'Uptown' vs. 'Downtown' trains – getting on the wrong side can cost you precious time! Standing near the doors and having your map ready will make you look like a seasoned New Yorker. Making Every Minute Count: Pacing Your Day With just 24 hours, you'll be on the move! My advice is to prioritize what you absolutely have to see. While my itinerary packs a lot in, don't feel guilty if you skip one thing to spend more time at another. For example, if you're fascinated by history, spend an extra hour at the 9/11 Memorial Museum. If you're all about views, linger longer at The Edge. Wear comfortable shoes – this is non-negotiable! And don't forget to factor in travel time between destinations, even if they look close on a map. NYC blocks can be longer than you think, and train delays can happen. A Taste of Broadway (Even on a Short Trip!) I know, a full Broadway show in one day is tough, but you can still experience the magic! The area around Times Square is the heart of the Theater District. Even just walking through, seeing the marquee lights, and grabbing a souvenir from a theater shop can be an experience. You might even spot a familiar PLAYBILL cover on display. If you're feeling spontaneous and have a couple of hours in the evening, check out the TKTS booth in Times Square for discounted same-day show tickets. You never know what gems you might find, and catching even a matinee can be a fantastic way to immerse yourself in NYC's cultural scene without committing to a full evening. Evening Vibes: What to Do After Dark After your early supper, don't just head back. NYC comes alive at night! Instead of rushing off, consider a quick stop at a rooftop bar for stunning skyline views (like 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar or Westlight in Brooklyn for a different perspective). Even just wandering through Times Square at night is a spectacle of lights and energy. If you're a jazz fan, some clubs in Greenwich Village offer late-night sets. Or, simply find a cozy spot for a final drink and reflect on your incredible, action-packed day in the city that never sleeps. You'll leave feeling like you truly conquered NYC!
