🇸🇬 Things I wish I knew before custom cabinet

There are a few things I really wish someone told me earlier.

So here’s my little list, take whatever helps, skip whatever doesn’t. ✍️

1. Measurement matters 📏

A few centimetres can change everything,

how easy it is to reach the top shelf,

whether a drawer opens fully,

or if your appliances actually fit.

Now I triple-check.

And then… check again. 😅

2. Think about your daily routines, not Pinterest 📆

Pinterest didn’t know I’m 155cm.

Pinterest didn’t know I grab skincare half-asleep.

Pinterest didn’t know I love late-night cooking.

Custom cabinets should support your habits,

not someone’s aesthetic photo.

If you store rice in bulk, plan for that.

If you have 20 skincare bottles, plan for that too

3. Depth matters, don’t waste hidden space 🗄️

I didn’t know cabinet depth could change the whole experience.

Too shallow: things fall out.

Too deep: things disappear forever at the back.

When you get the right depth…

everything suddenly feels easier.

4. Hinges and hardware actually decide the “quality” 🪚

I used to think hardware was just… hardware.

Nope.

Good hinges: smooth, silent, satisfying.

Bad hinges: door crooked in 3 months.

If you’re going to upgrade one thing,

upgrade this.

5. Custom doesn’t automatically mean perfect 🤎

I had this idea that custom = flawless.

⚠️But the truth is, it still depends on workmanship, communication,

and how clear you are with what you want.

Ask questions.

Ask for drawings.

Ask for samples.

6. It’s worth it… if you’re clear about your needs 💯

Now that everything fits beautifully and works the way I need it to,

I finally understand why people recommend custom cabinets.

If I could go back, I’d still do it…

just with a little more awareness and a lot less guessing.

2025/11/18 Edited to

... Read moreWhen planning for custom cabinetry, understanding the importance of accurate measurements really can't be overstated. Even a small miscalculation can lead to issues with appliance fit or accessibility. I found that double and triple checking measurements helped prevent costly mistakes. Another aspect often overlooked is how your everyday habits shape your cabinet design needs. For example, if you frequently store bulky items like large rice sacks or have a sizable skincare collection, your cabinet layout should accommodate these specifics rather than just following trendy aesthetics from platforms like Pinterest. Custom cabinets should truly reflect how you use your space daily. Cabinet depth is also a critical factor. I learned that cabinets too shallow can cause items to fall out, while those too deep lead to forgotten clutter at the back. Getting the depth just right simplifies storage and retrieval tremendously. This was a game-changer in my experience. One surprising revelation was how much hinges and hardware affect cabinet quality and longevity. Smooth, sturdy hinges create a silent and satisfying opener, whereas cheaper ones often result in crooked doors within months. Investing in good hardware upgrades the entire cabinet experience. Finally, the quality of custom cabinetry depends heavily on workmanship and clear communication. I found requesting detailed drawings and material samples upfront really helped set realistic expectations and avoid surprises. Being involved and asking the right questions made all the difference. Ultimately, with careful planning and clear understanding of your needs, custom cabinets are absolutely worth it. If you're considering this option, take the time to evaluate your requirements closely and communicate them clearly to your builder. That way, your cabinets will not only look good but enhance how you live and function every day.
