5 novels I read and loved on Libby/Kobo
Hello my fellow book lovers!! I am a huge huge fan of the NLB and the libby app (especially when you sync it to a kobo!!) and I thought it would be fun to share five really good books that I borrowed from Libby recently.
Murder Your Employer by Rupert Holmes - this one sounds weird but it’s so fun and strangely heartwarming. Cliff Iverson wants to get rid of his boss, who is truly evil and about to unleash evil in the name of profit. The only problem is that he isn’t very good at it (his first murder attempt was a failure), which is why it’s a good thing he has a sponsorship to McMasters, who will teach him how to get away with murder. I mean… with deleting an individual.
How Do You Live by Genzaburo Yoshino - I borrowed this because of Hayao Miyazaki (of course) but even though the story and the movie have nothing in common, I enjoyed it! It’s a very sweet tale about this uncle writing letters to his nephew because his nephew is growing up without a father. Reminds me a bit of Daddy Long Legs, but in reverse and it’s set in Japan. Okay, maybe the books aren’t that similar.
None of This is True by Lisa Jewell - I had a hard time putting this one down! Podcaster Alix thinks she’s found her next series when she meets Josie, who was born on the same day as her but had a wildly different life. But Josie is hiding something beneath her denim on denim outfit and honestly, Josie scares me. Not enough to put down the book but enough to make me think that podcasting is dangerous business.
The Franchise Affair by Josephine Tey - I’m having some trouble believing this was publishing in 1948 because it feels so modern! Sure, there is no social media in the book but the trial by a faceless mob feels like it’s been replaying over and over on our screens. In The Franchise Affair, two local misfits/eccentrics are accused of kidnapping and honestly, it looks bad against them. Especially since the victim looks so innocent! This book played with stereotypes of victims and how we can be quick to judge.
The Left Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix - You’re a left handed bookseller if you’ll fight first and ask questions later. You’re a right handed bookseller if you’re more about outwitting people with your brains. You’re a reader if you possess no magic whatsoever and do not work in a bookstore and really only just read about magical booksellers who fight.
