What the viral videos didn’t tell me
I don’t know about you, but I found out about Sushi Guren from a video hyping it up as an omakase where you can order as much as you want for seconds and thirds. Ummm… hello yes please? My husband was so excited for this!!
We got the $98++ omakase and honestly felt it was worth it. The appetisers were GREAT, I honestly loved the daikon salad soooo much - feels like stewed daikon but they added a creamy sauce; didn’t think that would work but it did! And the appetisers and sashimi come in this cute little tower!
For non-sushi courses, the torched yellowtail with onion sauce was also delicious! The soup was a simple fish soup (to me almost like stock) but my husband found it a good palate cleanser and he had it between nigiri sushi refills. The chawanmushi has chunks of fish and was a pleasant change from the usual ones.
As for the sushi courses, they felt endless. At one point they gave us this crab sushi that was SO GOOD. The chutoro with egg yolk and shiso was also yums. And this is where I realised that not all the sushi you try is available for re-order! The sushi you can re-order in the second and third round are on this reusable sheet and you can write how many pieces you want with a marker. Take note that not all items are available, and if there’s a * next to the name, you need to be on the premium course (the 128 course) to be able to order them. So stuff like the engawa is out.
And for the mince tuna - ours first came in a roll, but if you order the top up, it comes as a nigiri. The roll is perhaps a bit better because of the nori but honestly their tuna negitoro is just so good because they add these crunchy bits that make the texture different (and a bit addictive) that it’s worth getting the top up just for that!!
It was overall a good experience - very down to earth omakase with some interesting twists. Like I mentioned before, I really liked the appetisers and some of the nigiri have some citrus zest on it, which makes it refreshing.
By the way, the music mostly western - stuff we recognise and my husband can sing karaoke to. We talked to the chef and he mentioned it was because not many people know Japanese songs, so they opted for songs they knew and thought their customers would know too! I think the background music is a good indicator of the experience - fun, and a little bit diff from the other omakase experiences out there!
