For actual beach time in Puerto Rico near the city, parts of Isla Verde Beach offer gentle waves and resort amenities that are great for families. It’s perfect if you want to combine beach time with easy access to restaurants and shops. Beyond just the specific beaches, I learned a few crucial tips for making a beach day with kids in Puerto Rico a huge success. Always, always bring plenty of reef-safe sunscreen, hats, and rash guards. The sun is no joke! Hydration is key, so pack a cooler with water and juice boxes. And don't forget beach toys! A simple bucket and shovel can keep them entertained for hours. We also brought a pop-up beach tent for extra shade and a quiet spot for naps. If you're looking for other family fun in Puerto Rico, we took a day trip to El Yunque National Forest, which has some amazing, easy hikes suitable for kids, and even a waterfall where you can swim. It was a refreshing change of pace from the sand and sun. And if your kids are a bit older, a night kayak tour of a bioluminescent bay is truly magical and a unique experience that they’ll never forget.
