Art Tower, Pyrasri Gallery, abandoned 36 years but open for 3 days⁉️

The Pyrasri Art Tower was abandoned for 36 years before we and many were born again, but this return is part of the art research with the society that Revitalizing Bangkok will resurrect an old building that was abandoned 🏚️ but a historic or artistic place that spent three years together.

🔹 year 1 - Abandoned temple like Bhumrin Rajapani Temple

🔹 2nd year - Lumbinistan, an abandoned building used to dance liloquies, focuses on a group of elderly people.

🔹 third year - the last year of this research focused on art, choosing the Bhirasri Institute of Modern Art (BIMA), Thailand's first Art Gallery.

We have the opportunity to participate in the Walking Tour with Mr. Thirpong Vishnu, an artist and a team of curators at the "Art - Thailand - Time" exhibition, and tell us the experiences that have been visited at the Arts Hall since they were art students until they were shown before they closed. 🥹

The "Pyrasri Art Hall" was born of the idea of a Pyrasri art teacher who wanted a place to exhibit Modern Art, but the idea was not initiated, and the teacher died in 1962 😢, and Dr. Pui was trying to shape the idea into a shape. 🌟

Dr. Pun and several students of the Arts co-founded the "Pyra Si Hall of Arts Foundation" and invited the Thip Royal Society to become president and become the main funder of the Pyra Si Hall of Arts. ✨

This land is rented at the present location in Sathorn Soi 1 (Sathorn Prathom) for rent per month or per year at only 1 baht (this is, according to your opinion), so that the artist can have the exhibition space as the Arts Department has intended. This land belongs to the Thip Royal Society. The building is owned by the Arts Hall Foundation, so that the building is still preserved to date, not yet built into houses, condos or offices. 🏠🏢

The Pyrasri Arts Hall was officially launched on May 14, 1974, coinciding with the death of the Arts. It is the first public art hall and is privately run as a space to present new ways of art. 🌈🌟 Because before, most art works in Thailand were paintings, prints or photographs. For sculptures or installations, art was rarely available. If there were, it was only a small piece. 🎨🖼️

It is also open to a variety of performances including Installation Art, Music Show or Drama. It is free to use. The building supports the venue, but public relations, print the work for the artist at their own expense, and if you can sell the work, there is a deduction of about 20% to the building. We see that it is fair to have a place to host and express the art for free.

At its opening, the building received a positive trend among people involved in the arts, including the general public and foreigners living in Thailand. 🤩

Because the Arts Hall was launched in 1974, after October 14, 1973, and a few years later, October 6, 1976, the artistic expression area was investigated by the police 👮🏻‍♂️🚓, whose work was perceived to convey politics, the police seized the work or burned it 🔥. The exhibition was only held for a few days, it was not possible to continue. Some artists who did not convey Thai politics, but were worried that there would be difficulties and did not want to have problems with the police, also burned their work. 😭

Finally, the artwork is still controlled and cannot be freely presented as the art department intended. 😢

After the long-running operation of the building, Khun Thipsri has been funding and sponsoring the Arts Hall. Pirasri has all along died in 1987, making the privately run building unfunded by the government, causing the building to lack a lot of funding 💸💸 because it is open for artists to exhibit their work for free. Many artists have been invited to exhibit their work in order to deduct the percentage from the sale of the artist's work and turn the money to spend. But finally, there is a lack of money in the operation of the building. It is the main reason to close the Arts Hall Pirasri in 1988. 🥹

For Art Gallry, as most people know, the Bangkok Art Gallery (BACC) was activated in 2006, located at the intersection of Pathum Wan, a BMA estate that, although privately funded, still has restrictions or conditions on the exhibition of BMA-controlled works. 🤔

After 36 years of desertion, Revitalizing Bangkok has resurrected the Pyrasri Arts Hall for free participation, which is only held for three days, starting from March 28-30, 2024.

Remembering BIMA: Revitalizing Bangkok Team

It includes interviews from artists and scholars who have exhibited art or been involved with the Pyrrasri Arts Hall during the 14 years that the Arts Hall has been available to the public.

Personally, we like this work and are glad to have the opportunity to hear the story of the Arts Hall. Phra Si from Khun Phi, too. We can know the history of each area well. 🥰💗

But there is a little bit of regret that we have selected the Walking Tour, which is thought to be a private group presentation because there are questions to be selected and for a time before being visited by the public. But it has become a lot more people to listen to us 😅. Many people who have signed up and been selected will try to walk near the speaker or will not hear the lecture. But with a free event available to everyone, it is not a big issue or problem.
