Floating objects using tissue paper is a fascinating experiment that combines concepts from physics and everyday materials to create visually pleasing effects. When tissue paper floats on water, it's primarily due to surface tension—the cohesive force between water molecules that forms a sort of 'skin' on the water's surface. In my own experience trying this experiment, the number of tissue papers makes a big difference. A single sheet gets quickly saturated and sinks, but layering several tissues carefully allows the water's surface tension to support the combined weight. This experiment also demonstrates capillary action as water begins to seep through the layers. For best results, use very thin, dry tissue paper and gently place them flat on clean water without disturbing the surface. You can observe how the paper absorbs water, becomes heavier, and eventually overcomes the water’s supporting force. It’s surprisingly satisfying to see how many layers it takes before the delicate balance tips and the tissue sinks. Additionally, this simple challenge is a fun way to engage with science at home, whether as a solo relaxing activity or a playful competition with friends or family. Trying to guess and then test how many tissues can float ties into learning about buoyancy and materials’ interaction with water. Each attempt offers a slightly different outcome due to variables like tissue paper thickness, water purity, and ambient conditions. I also found that experimenting with different paper sizes and shapes—like folding or tearing tissues—can change how they float, providing a deeper understanding of surface area and weight distribution. This hands-on water experiment is not only an interesting ASMR experience but also a great educational tool to spark curiosity about daily physics phenomena.
