As a Rider and driver in SG

How does it feel like holding both licenses since 2016?

As a rider : I constantly have to be 2 steps ahead of traffic. Analysing and paying attention to cars ahead of me who decides to switch lane without due care. Lane splitting? Gotta be quick if not, other bikers will give me that "you owe me money look" . Stay in lane? Risks getting rear ended by a driver who's not careful otr.

As a driver : Constantly have to worry about my rear (whenever I'm towing a vehicle.) because fr, even with blinkers on, drivers will still tailgate me. And I also have to be patient about drivers who decides to just cut my lane without signalling or checking their blindspot. Dont even get me started abt responding to accident cases. Give way? Yea, dream on. They dgaf about you. Unless you are Police or SCDF. So long as I dont clear that accident car, that lane will forever be blocked. And to end it off, I have to be 3-4 steps ahead to even judge. Because, honestly, drivers here are so unpredictable.

Unpopular opinion : Sometimes, or infact nowadays. I just feel like just taking public transport to work. Though different sets of problems will occur. 🤣

... Read moreHaving held both a motorcycle and driver’s license in Singapore for several years, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the unique challenges that come with each mode of transport. Riding a motorcycle demands acute awareness; you have to anticipate dangers well in advance because cars can unexpectedly cut lanes or brake abruptly without signaling. Lane splitting, though common, requires quick reflexes—not doing so can earn disapproving looks from fellow riders. On the flip side, driving a car brings its own set of frustrations. One major issue is dealing with tailgaters, especially when towing a vehicle—this really tests patience and driving skills. Despite using indicators, many drivers in Singapore often ignore safe lane changing practices, cutting you off without checking blind spots. Road accidents can be a nightmare for drivers too, as uncooperative onlookers and trapped lanes create traffic jams that linger until authorities intervene. Personally, these factors sometimes lead me to consider switching to public transportation to avoid the stress of unpredictable road behaviors. However, even public transit has its own inconveniences and delays. Balancing these experiences has taught me that whether riding or driving, staying several steps ahead mentally is key to navigating Singapore's busy roads safely. For anyone considering holding dual licenses or simply figuring out the best way to commute in this city, expect to constantly adapt, keep your wits about you, and remain patient. Singapore’s road culture is fast-paced and sometimes chaotic, but with experience, you can learn to handle its quirks while staying safe.
