Did God create evil?

2025/1/31 Edited to

... Read moreI've been thinking a lot about the profound question, "Did God create evil?" For a long time, it felt like such a contradiction. How could a loving God allow, or even create, such suffering? But then I encountered a perspective that completely shifted my understanding, much like that little note explained: evil isn't a creation, but rather an *absence*. It's a powerful analogy, isn't it? Just as cold isn't a thing in itself, but the *absence of heat*, and darkness is merely the *absence of light*, evil is the absence of God's presence, love, and good. This really clicked for me. It means God didn't actively 'make' evil; instead, when humanity chooses to turn away from Him, from His will, from love and faith, that void is filled with what we perceive as evil. It's a consequence of free will and the choices we make, or fail to make. This understanding deeply impacts how I view the constant struggle between good and evil. It makes me realize that our role isn't just to fight 'evil' as an external force, but to actively cultivate and bring God's presence, faith, and love into the world. Every act of kindness, every moment of compassion, every choice to forgive – these are not just good deeds; they are actively filling the world with God's light, pushing back the darkness, and reversing the *absence*. And what about those times when it feels like God has 'relented' or isn't acting? This concept gives me a new lens. If God is inherently good and unchanging, then perhaps what we perceive as Him 'relenting' isn't a change in His character, but rather our experience of the world's absence of Him. His love and grace are constant, but our reception of them can be hindered by the choices (our own or others') that create that absence. It's a reminder that even in despair, His presence is waiting to be embraced. This clarity has also transformed my approach to spiritual practices, especially attending church and reflecting during Holy Week. When I'm taking notes for church, I'm not just listening to sermons; I'm actively looking for ways to bring more of God's presence into my life. During Holy Week, as we reflect on immense sacrifice and suffering, understanding evil as an absence helps me grasp the profound presence of love and redemption. The darkness of the crucifixion isn't God creating evil; it's the ultimate demonstration of His love filling the deepest void, bringing light even to death. It’s a powerful reminder that even in the ultimate absence of hope, God's plan for good was always at work. This journey of understanding has truly strengthened my faith. It's not about questioning God's power or goodness, but about recognizing the profound responsibility we have as humans to choose good, to choose presence, and to actively participate in bringing God's light to every corner of our lives and the world around us. It's a call to action, not just passive belief.
