Okuizome, Japanese Traditional Ceremony🥢✨

Okuizome is a traditional Japanese ceremony that celebrates a baby’s first meal, typically held on the 100th or 120th day after birth. The ceremony symbolizes the wish for the child to have a lifetime free from hunger. Here's how it generally proceeds:

1. Setting the Date: Usually held on the 100th or 120th day after the baby’s birth.

2. Preparing the Meal: Traditional foods are prepared, including:

- Whole grilled sea bream (tai no okashira tsuki)

- Red rice (sekihan)

- Simmered foods (like vegetables and fish)

- Vinegared dishes (like namasu)

- Clear soup (like osuimono)

- Stones for teeth strengthening (hagotan no ishi) to wish for strong teeth.

3. Conducting the Ceremony: A small amount of each food is brought to the baby’s lips, performing the "eating" gesture without actually feeding them. This act symbolizes the prayer for the baby’s health and prosperity.

I got all the ingredients from Weee! and I was able to celebrate my baby’s 100 days with traditional Japanese food in the US🥳

... Read moreCelebrating my baby's 100th day with Okuizome was truly a milestone I’ll cherish forever. It’s more than just a meal; it's a profound wish for a child's prosperous future, especially freedom from hunger. As someone living abroad, bringing this beautiful Japanese tradition to life felt incredibly significant, and I want to share a deeper dive into what made it so special and how you can too! The core of Okuizome lies in its symbolic foods, each meticulously chosen for its auspicious meaning. The star of our traditional Japanese Okuizome meal set was undoubtedly the whole grilled red snapper (tai no okashira tsuki). In Japan, 'tai' sounds similar to 'medetai,' meaning celebratory or auspicious, making it perfect for this happy occasion. Then there’s the vibrant sekihan, or red rice, cooked with azuki beans. Its color is believed to ward off evil and bring good fortune. My meal set also beautifully featured a clear clam soup (osuimono), where the clams symbolize a happily married couple, emphasizing the wish for the child to find their perfect match in life. The namasu, a refreshing vinegared dish of daikon and carrot, represents the celebratory red and white colors, while umeboshi (pickled plum) signifies longevity and good health. And let's not forget the small stone, often called 'hagotan no ishi,' placed beside the food. The original article mentions it's for teeth strengthening, but it also carries a broader wish for the baby to grow up strong and healthy, with a resilient spirit. Seeing all these elements, arranged carefully with red chopsticks, made the entire ceremony feel incredibly authentic and heartfelt, even far from home. Preparing these dishes, or sourcing them, truly connects you to generations of tradition. For those of us outside Japan, celebrating Okuizome might seem daunting, but it's totally achievable! Like me, you can often find many key ingredients at larger Asian grocery stores or online specialty retailers. If a full pre-made Okuizome set isn't available, don't be afraid to prepare the individual components yourself. The intention behind the ceremony is what truly matters. You can even simplify certain dishes if time is an issue. The important thing is to gather your family, express your hopes for your little one, and create beautiful memories around this unique 'first meal ceremony.' Seeing my baby in their floral outfit, with 'Happy 100 Days' decorations, truly brought the meaning of this special day to life. It’s a wonderful way to introduce your child to their cultural heritage and celebrate their journey into the world.
