... Read moreOkay, so you know that feeling when you try something so incredibly delicious at a restaurant that you just have to try making it at home? That was me with the lasagna at Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano! Seriously, the plate of lasagna I had there was pure perfection – perfectly melted cheese cascading over rich red sauce, with those tender noodles and flavorful meat. It truly inspired me to get into my kitchen and try my hand at recreating that magic. Now, while nothing beats dining out sometimes, having a fantastic homemade lasagna recipe in your back pocket is a game-changer. So, after a lot of experimenting, I've finally perfected a classic lasagna recipe that brings those restaurant-quality flavors right to your dining table.
This recipe might seem a little involved, but trust me, every layer is worth it. It’s perfect for a cozy family dinner or when you want to impress guests. Here’s what you’ll need and how I make mine:
My Go-To Classic Lasagna Recipe
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound ground beef (you can also use a mix of beef and Italian sausage for extra flavor!)
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
12 lasagna noodles (oven-ready or traditional, cooked al dente if traditional)
1 (15 ounce) container ricotta cheese
1 large egg
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus extra for topping
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 (16 ounce) package shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions:
Make the Meat Sauce: Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess grease. Stir in chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Simmer the Sauce: Pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and water. Stir in parsley, basil, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and let it cook for at least 30 minutes, or longer if you have time, stirring occasionally. This really lets the flavors meld!
Prepare the Ricotta Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Mix well until everything is smoothly combined.
Preheat Oven & Assemble: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). If using traditional noodles, cook them according to package directions, then drain and rinse with cold water to prevent sticking.
Layering Magic!
Spread about 1 cup of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Arrange 3-4 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
Spread half of the ricotta mixture evenly over the noodles.
Top with about 1/3 of the mozzarella cheese.
Spoon about 1.5 cups of meat sauce over the mozzarella.
Repeat layers: noodles, remaining ricotta, mozzarella, meat sauce.
Finish with a final layer of noodles, the remaining meat sauce, and sprinkle generously with the rest of the mozzarella and some extra Parmesan.
Bake It Up: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil (you might want to spray the underside of the foil with cooking spray to prevent cheese sticking). Bake for 25 minutes.
Golden Brown Top: Remove the foil and bake for another 20-25 minutes, or until the top is bubbly and golden brown.
Rest & Serve: This is crucial! Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving. This helps it set and prevents it from falling apart.
There you have it! A hearty, cheesy, and utterly satisfying lasagna that will make you feel like a culinary superstar. It might even give that amazing Biaggi's lasagna a run for its money in your own home! Give it a try and let me know how it turns out. Happy cooking!
