From my own experience, the impact of believing in a student's ability cannot be overstated—it fosters confidence and motivation even when challenges arise. The example of a student who initially aimed for Kobe University but reached Kyoto University’s top is inspiring because it shows that with the right support and freedom, incredible achievements are possible. In many cultures, especially in Japan, entrance exams and school reputations heavily influence educational paths. However, allowing children the freedom to choose their aspirations and supporting those choices builds a trusting relationship that encourages perseverance. This kind of parental trust empowers students to take ownership of their learning and explore areas where they excel. Additionally, the references to average deviation scores and parental professions underline the importance of a supportive environment both academically and socially. Parents who engage with their children’s education—whether through hands-on help or simply by believing in them—can create an atmosphere conducive to success. I also relate to the notion of ‘freedom’ in education. Allowing students to explore interests without excessive pressure can nurture creativity and resilience. Students who feel trusted often develop better problem-solving skills and a strong sense of responsibility. Lastly, reflecting on interviews with students and observations of their experiences provides valuable perspectives for parents and educators alike. It reminds us that beyond test scores, emotional support and trust are fundamental. I encourage all parents to embrace this mindset and truly listen to their children’s goals, as this is a key step in helping them unlock their full potential.
