Observing lions in the wild is one of the most extraordinary experiences I’ve ever had while traveling.
While on our game drive, in the Masai Mara National Reserve, we came upon some lions hanging out in the tall grass perched up on a hill. The cars don’t bother them. They may even think of them as just another large animal. To our right we saw 3 zebras gallivanting toward us completely unaware of the zebras that had crouched down in the tall grass as camouflage.
Thanks to my mom yelling, the zebras were warned and ran away before the lions could get them.

So many of you asked me about planning my Masai Mara safari in Kenya, and honestly, it can feel a little overwhelming at first! My biggest tip is to research different camps and tour operators. I chose one that focused on ethical wildlife viewing and had fantastic reviews for safety – which really put my mind at ease, especially for a solo female traveler (or anyone, really!). Think about what kind of experience you want: luxury, mid-range, or budget. I found that booking during the shoulder seasons (like May/June or October/November) can offer a great balance of fewer crowds and good wildlife viewing, though the Great Migration (July-October) is truly epic if you can swing it! For those of you dreaming of a 'Kenya photo safari,' let me tell you, it's a photographer's paradise! My camera roll is overflowing with incredible shots. Don't forget a good zoom lens – seriously, it's a game-changer for capturing those amazing lion and leopard moments without disturbing them. Patience is absolutely key; sometimes you wait for ages, and then suddenly, the action unfolds right before your eyes. I also brought a beanbag for stability, which was surprisingly useful in the safari vehicle. And remember to always respect the animals' space; no photo is worth stressing out the wildlife. I learned a lot about respecting the environment on this trip, which is super important for everyone visiting. While my encounter with the lions was definitely a highlight, the Masai Mara National Reserve is teeming with so much more! I saw huge herds of elephants, graceful giraffes, speedy cheetahs, and even a rhino hiding in the distance – completing my 'Big Five' checklist! The diversity of birds was also surprising and beautiful. Every game drive felt like unwrapping a new gift. The guides are incredible at spotting things you'd never see on your own, sharing so much knowledge about each animal and the entire ecosystem. One thing I learned that really stuck with me is how integral the local Masai tribe is to the operation and conservation of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Their stewardship and traditional knowledge are vital to protecting this incredible landscape and its wildlife. It adds such a rich cultural layer to the safari experience, making it more than just animal spotting. You truly feel a connection to the land and its people. A quick packing tip: layers are your best friend! Mornings can be quite chilly, but it heats up quickly during the day. Sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and insect repellent are non-negotiables for comfort and protection. And of course, comfortable shoes for when you're back at camp and exploring. Trust me, you'll want to be ready for anything and everything this magical place throws your way!
