We are extremely lucky that modern cameras are incredibly good, and almost all the time we can leave the camera in Auto mode and concentrate on getting the subject in the viewfinder and pressing the button.
But moving to Manual can give us far more control, and makes it possible to capture some pictures and achieve some effects which Auto simply couldn’t do.
To learn how to use manual, let’s think about how the camera actually works:
At it’s heart is a sensor, which is almost an artificial eye. When we “point” the sensor at the subject, it reads the light reflected from it and using some clever technology translates that into the picture.
When you are NOT taking a picture, the sensor is covered by a shutter. When you press the button the shutter opens and allows light on to the sensor and it can “see” the picture.
There are three main variables which need to be in balance to make the picture come out “properly”.
Aperture
How wide open the shutter is – if it only opens a tiny chink not much light can come in. If it opens wider, more light floods in. Not very logically, the size of the aperture is called an f-stop and the bigger the f-stop the smaller the aperture!
Shutter speed
How long the shutter opens for – the longer it is open, the more light reaches the sensor. This is a bit more logical, and is quoted as a fraction of a second.
ISO sensitivity
This adjusts how sensitive the sensor is to light and is an ISO number. The higher the number, the more sensitive to light!
When these three are in balance, the picture will come out “just right” - neither all white and washed out, nor dark and murky. At it’s most simple, getting that balance right depends on how bright or dark the scene you are photographing is.
But altering each variable has other effects too, and here is where we can really take control! Let’s look at each in turn:
ISO
Try thinking of this as moulding clay…..if you do it using your thumb, quickly, you will move a lot of clay but the details will be lost….if you gently work away with a spatula, you will be able to get more detail, but the modelling will take more time. So a high ISO gets the picture as quickly as possible, but at the expense of capturing detail.
Shutter speed
Obviously, the longer the time the shutter is open, the more light will fall on to the sensor….
Aperture
The theory of this is pretty complex, so we will just think about the effect, which is that for a wide aperture (small f number!) only a part of the picture at a certain distance will be sharp and in focus. If the aperture is narrower, a much bigger range will be in focus – this is known as depth of field. You might ask, why not set it so that as much as possible of the picture is sharp? Hey photo lovers! So, we've covered the basics of ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed, which are truly the holy trinity of photography. But how do you actually use them in the real world to get those jaw-dropping shots? Let me share some practical tips I've picked up on my journey from auto to manual. First off, remember these three settings always work together. Think of it like a seesaw – change one, and the others need a little tweak to keep your photo perfectly exposed. My biggest 'aha!' moment was realizing that understanding their individual effects is key to taking control. Let's talk Aperture (that f-stop number!). The article mentioned depth of field, which is super important. If I'm shooting a portrait on my ZV-E10 and want that beautiful blurry background (bokeh), I'll choose a small f-number like f/1.8 or f/2.8. This opens up the lens wide, letting in more light but focusing only on my subject. But if I'm capturing a sprawling landscape and want everything in focus, I'll go for a larger f-number, like f/8 or f/11. This narrows the opening, bringing more of the scene into sharp focus. It’s a game-changer for storytelling in your photos! Next up, Shutter Speed. This is all about capturing or freezing motion. If I'm trying to photograph a fast-moving pet or a kid playing, I usually opt for a fast shutter speed, like 1/500th of a second or faster. This 'freezes' the action, ensuring my subject is sharp, not blurry. On the other hand, if I want to create that silky smooth effect for a waterfall or capture light trails at night, I'll use a slow shutter speed, sometimes several seconds long. That's when a tripod becomes your best friend! Finally, ISO sensitivity. The article explained it well: higher ISO means more light but also more 'noise' or grain, as my camera (and the OCR confirms!) likes to remind me. I try to keep my ISO as low as possible (usually 100 or 200) for the cleanest image quality, especially when there's plenty of light. But when I'm in a dimly lit restaurant or indoors without a flash, bumping up the ISO (say, to 800 or 1600, maybe even up to 15,000 as mentioned in the OCR for some cameras) is necessary to get an exposure without blurring from a slow shutter. It's a compromise, but a necessary one to get the shot! My top advice for learning faster? Get out and *practice*! Don't be afraid to switch your camera from 'Auto' to 'Manual Exposure' mode. Experiment with different settings in the same scene. Take a picture, review it, change one setting, and take another. Pay attention to how each adjustment impacts the final image. You'll quickly develop an intuitive feel for what settings work best in different situations. It’s how I finally stopped guessing and started creating the photos I truly envisioned!
