... Read moreAs someone who identifies as AfroLatina, I find it empowering to connect with both my African and Latin American roots. AfroLatina culture is rich with history, music, and traditions that reflect a unique blend of influences from across continents. Living in Panama, a country known for its diverse population and cultural fusion, I have witnessed how AfroLatina identity is a source of pride and strength for many. One aspect that stands out is the celebration of AfroLatina heritage through festivals, food, and language. For instance, Afro-Panamanian music like tamborito and reggae en español allow us to express our history and joy in ways that resonate deeply within our community. Being AfroLatina means embracing the challenges and triumphs of a diasporic identity, which often requires navigating different cultural expectations. I’ve also learned that visibility matters a lot. Seeing representations of AfroLatinas in media and social platforms boosts confidence and inspires younger generations to embrace their heritage without reservation. The phrase "I'm literally AfroLatina," as highlighted in popular culture, emphasizes authenticity and ownership of identity—an important message in combating stereotypes. Sharing our stories and experiences, whether through social media hashtags like #afrolatina or participating in events across Panama, helps build solidarity and appreciation for the community. It also fosters an environment where we can celebrate our diversity while confronting social issues related to race and identity. Overall, being AfroLatina in Panama offers a vibrant and meaningful cultural experience that blends history, pride, and a forward-looking sense of identity. It’s a reminder that our unique backgrounds enrich not only our own lives but also the broader cultural landscape of Latin America.

The image defines "Negrito/negrita" as a Spanish diminutive term meaning "little Black person/one," used as an endearment or to describe dark features, with its usage being debated. Below, a video thumbnail shows a man speaking, with text mentioning "Spanish colonizers called them 'negritos'."
A Wikipedia article about Negros, the fourth largest island in the Philippines, is displayed. It includes its English and Tagalog pronunciations, land area, and highlights its marine biodiversity. A satellite map of the island is partially visible at the bottom.
The image explains that "Negro Island(s)" refers to historical locations undergoing name changes due to slavery, while "Negros" in Spanish refers to the Afro-Hispanic heritage of dark-skinned people. It also mentions Negro Island, Maine.
