Words & Phrases we don’t use in our relationship

Words are powerful.

Instead of using words to tear someone down, use your words to uplift, encourage and express love.

Over my 13 years of marriage my husband and I have said some hurtful things. They don’t have to be extreme or vulgar. Simple words or phrases that are negative can really hurt someone.

I learned that a simple phrase that I use to say ALL the time, hurt my husband the most. He took my words literally. And it was:

“I hate you”

As years passed, he truly believed I hated him. Which was not the case at all and I felt terrible that I ever said it. I said those words out of anger and in reality, I loved him more than he knew.

So we came up with a list of words and phases that we are just not allowed to say to each other or anyone else.

I don’t care

I hate you

What about me

Whatever

Stupid

Shut up

... Read moreWords hold immense power, especially within the sacred space of a relationship. What we say, and how we say it, can either build bridges or burn them down. Over the years, my partner and I, like many couples, learned this lesson the hard way. There were phrases we uttered in anger or frustration that, despite our underlying love, chipped away at our connection. It's not just about avoiding extreme insults; often, it's the seemingly small, dismissive words that do the most damage. From our own experience, and the list we've committed to avoiding, here's a deeper dive into why certain words are so detrimental and what we've learned to say instead: "I don't care": This phrase is a relationship poison. When your partner shares a concern, a feeling, or even just a thought, and you respond with "I don't care," you're essentially invalidating their experience. It communicates disinterest and a lack of empathy. Instead, even if you don't fully understand or agree, try saying, "I hear you," or "Tell me more about why that's important to you." Sometimes just listening is enough. "I hate you": As I personally discovered, words spoken in the heat of the moment can be taken literally and deeply scar your partner. Even if it's not truly meant, it suggests a profound rejection. When anger flares, it's crucial to express the emotion without attacking the person. Try, "I'm really angry/hurt right now because of X," or "I feel like you don't understand me." Focus on your feelings and the specific situation, not a destructive label. "What about me?": While it's important for both partners' needs to be met, using this phrase often comes across as self-centered during a discussion where your partner is trying to express their feelings or struggles. It immediately shifts the focus and can make your partner feel unheard. Instead, acknowledge their feelings first, then you can express your own needs: "I understand you're feeling X, and I also feel Y. How can we address both?" "Whatever": This word is a master of passive aggression. It conveys apathy, dismissiveness, and disrespect for the conversation or your partner's opinions. It shuts down communication rather than opening it up. If you're disengaged or frustrated, it's better to be direct and honest: "I'm finding this conversation difficult right now," or "Can we revisit this when we're both calmer?" or even, "I'm not sure how to respond to that." "Stupid": Labeling your partner or their ideas as "stupid" is a direct personal attack. It erodes self-esteem and creates a hostile environment where neither person feels safe to be vulnerable. Focus criticism on actions or ideas, not on the person's intelligence or worth. For instance, "That decision had unintended consequences," rather than "That was a stupid decision." "Shut up": This aggressive command immediately puts your partner on the defensive and makes them feel silenced and disrespected. It's a power play that has no place in a loving relationship. If you need a moment of quiet, or feel overwhelmed, communicate it respectfully: "I need a moment to collect my thoughts," or "Can we take a break from this discussion and come back to it in 10 minutes?" Beyond just avoiding these specific phrases, cultivating a healthy communication style involves active listening, using "I" statements to express your feelings without blame, and consistently affirming your partner. Remember, it's a continuous journey, but consciously choosing words that uplift and connect, rather than tear down, is fundamental to a thriving, resilient partnership.
