Step-by-Step Wig Install Tutorial
Installing a wig can be quite challenging if you’ve never done it before. But as someone who’s worn wigs for a few years, I’ve gathered the most important steps that you should NOT skip when installing a wig:
1. Wiping the hair line and forehead with rubbing alcohol. This removes all the oils, moisture, and cleans the skin, prepping it for the next steps.
2. Lay the edges down and back so they don’t get stuck in the glue and the install is cleaner. 💌 Brand: RED KISS extra hold hairspray
3. Installing a bald cap is essential for protecting your edges and a having clean install. Skin like HD caps ONLY because they’re the thinnest and don’t have much pigment so it appears “invisible” underneath the lace. 💌 Brand: HD Wig Cap by Teenitor on Amazon
4. Scalp Protector is a barrier between the skin and the wig glue/lace. It prevents irritation and minimizes how much oil and sweat is produced so the wig stays on longer. Especially good if you do sports! 💌 Brand: Walker Tape Scalp Protector
5. Cutting the ear tabs before gluing down the lace, is KEY to get the corners of the wig to lay completely flat. I part what I’m cutting of while it’s on my head then proceed to cut of the excess lace on a table or mannequin head to get the best angle.
6. The perimeter of my face is a bit darker than the rest of my face, so instead of my foundation shade, I use my contour powder. Very lightly, I add it onto the lace and my bald cap, making everything one color, matching my skin tone, and giving it a seamless look.
7. With a popsicle stick, I spread out the glue that I dotted onto the hairline. When applying multiple layers, the key is to apply thin layers and wait until the glue is clear to lay down the lace. 💌 Brand: Bold Hold Active Lace Glue
8. Before applying any sort of band, the glue has to be 100% dry or the lace will stick to the band, ruining the entire look. I double band with a paper wrap strip first then a band for 20 minutes. 💌 Brand: Gray Wrap Strip from the beauty supply store
9. Last but not least Melting Spray! I apply this lightly onto the lace for a better melt so it can look like skin andddd it removes that white, chalky line you get after removing the band. 💌 Brand: Dola Hair Melting Spray
