Back in the Day: When Our TV Time Was a Time Warp
Growing up, our TV experience was basically a mix of time travel and channel surfing. We didn’t just watch the shows that were popular when we were kids – we watched the shows that were popular when our parents were kids! Seriously, our TV lineup looked like a mashup of decades. One minute we’d be solving mysteries with Perry Mason, then singing along to the theme of Gilligan’s Island. After that, we’d settle in for a little small-town wisdom with The Andy Griffith Show or laugh at the classic shenanigans of I Love Lucy.
And then, of course, we’d switch back to more current shows like The A-Team, Knight Rider, Full House, Family Ties, The Wonder Years, or ALF. It didn’t matter that some of the shows were in black and white and others were rocking that bright 80s aesthetic – it was all just part of the experience. We grew up appreciating both the wholesome humor of Andy and Barney and the righteous one-liners of David Hasselhoff.
So here’s my question: Do young people today watch shows from the 80s like we watched shows from the 50s and 60s? Are kids these days kicking back with episodes of Magnum, P.I., The Golden Girls, or MacGyver? Or is that just wishful thinking on my part?
