It taught me the precision and calm needed in veterinary care. Then there are the emergency situations, like when a 'Chocolate Fiend' dog ingested Hershey's. Induced vomiting isn't pretty, but it's vital, and seeing the dog recover reminds you why you do what you do. Assisting in orthopedic surgery is another intense experience. The focus, the sterile environment, the teamwork with the doctor – it's all about ensuring the best outcome for the animal. And the daily care, like administering nebulizer treatment to a golden retriever with asthma, highlights the ongoing dedication required to improve an animal's quality of life. Each case, from a routine check-up to a complex surgery, builds your skills and deepens your compassion. Into the Wild: Fieldwork and Conservation My fieldwork experiences have been just as impactful, offering a completely different perspective on animal welfare. Out on the boat, searching for sharks and rays, I've had incredible encounters. Holding that common blacktip shark or a juvenile green sea turtle, you feel a direct connection to the environment. It's not just about observation; it's about active participation in research and conservation. Collecting DNA samples and tagging marine species are crucial steps in understanding populations and protecting these magnificent creatures for the future. I've also had some truly unique experiences, like during an internship where I had to distract a young giraffe with treats while its mother received an important examination. It was a delicate balance of providing comfort and ensuring the vet could do their work. And then there was the rescued bear from Alaska, whose mouth needed attention due to chewing issues.
