How to plant seeds

3/19 Edited to

... Read morePlanting seeds is a rewarding experience that allows you to nurture plants from the very beginning of their life cycle. Based on my own gardening journey, I’ve found that starting with quality seeds and the right growing conditions makes all the difference. First, it’s important to select the right seeds for your climate and season. Some seeds require warmth to germinate, while others prefer cooler temperatures. Using seed-starting trays or containers filled with well-draining soil mix helps create the ideal environment for seedlings. Before planting, moisten the soil lightly to ensure it’s damp but not soggy—this encourages root development without risking seed rot. Plant seeds at the depth recommended on the seed packet; planting too deep can prevent them from sprouting, while planting too shallow may dry them out. After planting, cover the tray with a plastic dome or clear wrap to retain moisture and warmth until the seeds sprout. Once seedlings emerge, remove the cover and place them where they can receive ample indirect sunlight or use grow lights for consistent light exposure. Watering seedlings regularly is vital. From experience, it’s best to water from the bottom by placing trays in a shallow dish of water—this encourages roots to grow downward and prevents damping-off disease. Finally, as seedlings grow their first true leaves, begin to thin them by snipping weaker seedlings at soil level, allowing the strongest to thrive with sufficient space. Seeing small seeds develop into healthy plants is incredibly satisfying and connects you closer to nature. With patience and attentive care, your seedlings will grow strong, ready to be transplanted into your garden or larger pots for further growth.
