While my doctors use awesome methods like Exparel for extended pain control and prescribe medication, there are little things you can do to help. Remember how they said keeping your arms elevated helps? It’s true! Propping up your arms with pillows, even when resting, genuinely makes a difference in reducing swelling and improving comfort. I found a comfy recliner to be my best friend for the first few days, as lying completely flat was a bit challenging. One aspect that can feel a bit daunting is managing the drains. My doctor, Dr. Russo, mentioned them, and they are definitely a part of the early recovery process. Don't be scared! You'll get clear instructions on how to empty them and record the output. It might seem a bit gross at first, but it quickly becomes routine. Keeping the area clean and securing them properly is key to preventing discomfort and infection. Then there’s the swelling. Oh, the swelling! This is completely normal after such a significant procedure. My compression garment has been a lifesaver. Comfort over fashion is definitely the motto for the first few weeks! And don't forget about nourishing your body. Eating nutrient-rich foods and staying super hydrated are vital for healing. Your body is doing a lot of work repairing itself, so give it the best fuel possible. I made sure to have plenty of easy-to-prepare meals ready beforehand, so I wasn't stressing about cooking. Finally, a huge part of recovery is mental. Be patient with yourself. There will be good days and challenging days. Celebrate the small victories, like being able to move a little more freely or having less pain. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and your body needs time to heal.
