Things to do in Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is the perfect place to visit in Italy! The five towns are Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Favorite memories:

•Hike up the terraces to have a perfect view looking back on the town of Manarola & the amazing sunset.

•Nessun Dorma pesto making class in Manarola.

•Sunset boat cruise, booked through Airbnb and left out of Riomaggiore.

•Explore Vernazza and grab some gelato to enjoy by the water.

•Beach day/drinks on the beaches at Monterosso.

•Hike from Manarola to Corniglia and spend several hours exploring the town.

Cinque Terre
2023/7/13 Edited to

... Read moreAlright, fellow travelers! Since you loved hearing about my favorite Cinque Terre memories, I wanted to share some super practical tips that really helped me make the most of my trip. Trust me, planning ahead for these things makes all the difference, especially when you're dreaming of your own unforgettable Italian adventure! First things first: Getting Around Cinque Terre. The train is your absolute best friend here. It connects all five towns – Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore – so seamlessly, making it super easy to hop between them. I highly recommend getting the Cinque Terre Card; it covers unlimited train travel and access to the hiking trails. While the train is efficient, honestly, nothing beats seeing the region on foot! Hiking between the towns offers those iconic, picturesque views you see everywhere. I particularly loved the path from Manarola towards Corniglia; the terraced vineyards and coastal vistas are just breathtaking, especially around sunset. Remember, some trails might be closed for maintenance, so always check the official park website before you head out. For a different perspective, don't miss a boat trip! That sunset boat cruise I took, departing from Riomaggiore, was pure magic and gave us incredible views of the cliffside villages from the water. Next, let's talk about Savoring the Flavors. You absolutely HAVE to try the local Ligurian specialties. My pesto making class in Manarola was a highlight – learning to make their traditional pesto with fresh basil was such an immersive and delicious experience! It really makes you appreciate the local cuisine. Beyond pesto, keep an eye out for fresh focaccia. I remember seeing signs for 'Focaccia' and 'Bistro Margherita' in Corniglia; grabbing a warm slice while exploring the town was pure bliss. And of course, fresh seafood is a must, especially when you're enjoying the waterfront in Vernazza. Just imagine grabbing some gelato and finding a spot by the harbor! When to Visit & What to Pack can really impact your experience. I found that spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October) were ideal. The weather was pleasant for hiking, and while there were still tourists, it wasn't as overwhelmingly crowded as peak summer. In terms of packing, comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable – those cobblestone streets and hiking paths demand them! A swimsuit for a beach day in Monterosso, a light jacket for evenings, and plenty of sunscreen are also essentials. Finally, a quick tip on Booking Key Experiences. If you're keen on specific activities like a pesto making class or that incredible sunset boat cruise, especially during shoulder seasons, it’s a good idea to book them in advance. Many tours, like the one I found through Airbnb, can fill up quickly. This ensures you don't miss out on those truly unique moments that make Cinque Terre so special. Enjoy planning your own unforgettable Italian escape!
