Maximizing the Amex Dining Perks in Shanghai

Qiu · Restaurant is located inside Canopy by Hilton Shanghai Belfry Plaza (near Shanghai Legoland). If you book with an American Express Platinum Card, you get a US$100 dining credit (~RMB 700).

📒 Conclusions first: Prices are on the higher side. There’s a set menu for RMB 288 on Meituan (original price RMB 572), but it cannot be combined with the AmEx dining credit.

Dishes We Tried

Jasmine-Scented Smoked Sole Fish ¥98 🌟🌟🌟

Cold dish. Very crispy and completely boneless. The batter is thin, slightly sweet, and quite appetizing. Garnished with jasmine flowers.

Sea Urchin Sauce Coral Shrimp Balls ¥128 🌟🌟

On the sweet side, coated with sea urchin sauce and mayonnaise. The first bite is impressive, but it gets a bit rich after the second. The shrimp balls are small—about ¥21.33 each (Shanghai prices, wow ❗️).

Braised Pork Belly with Pig Tail with Soy Sauce ¥98 🌟🌟🌟

Braised pork belly with pig tail, very rich and flavorful. Sweet-savory profile, heavily braised, reminiscent of Dongpo pork.

Zhangqiao-Style Braised Lamb Belly Hot Pot ¥168 🌟🌟🌟

❤️Best dish of the night. The lamb is very tender, with the gaminess handled just right. Well-braised, flavorful, and not tough at all.

Stir-Fried Yellow Beef with Tribute Peppers ¥128 🌟🌟🌟

Lots of cilantro. Uses beef tenderloin, which is quite tender.

Tomato & Potato Braised Beef Brisket ¥128 🌟🌟🌟

Slightly sweet. The brisket is soft and well-braised, and the tomato broth is great with rice.

Fried Pork Chop ¥48 🌟

A miss. Extremely thin, with a slightly sour taste—unclear whether it’s the meat quality or the marinade. Dry and disappointing.

Stir-Fried Mountain Bean Sprouts with Wine Aroma ¥48 🌟🌟🌟

A simple vegetable dish with no strong standout features—but I liked it. Light wine aroma, refreshing, and good for cutting through richness.

Blanched Local Seasonal Greens ¥38 🌟🌟

Cantonese-style. Crisp Chinese kale with soy and oyster sauce, slightly sweet.

Home Style Pan-Fried Large Wontons Tossed in Sesame Sauce ¥48 🌟

Thick wrappers, little filling, only about the size of regular wontons. The sesame sauce is quite thin—best lightly dipped.

Seasonal Fruit Platter ¥28 🌟

Pretty much the same as the complimentary fruit in the hotel room.

Dinner Buffet ¥300+

There was an event that night, so a dinner buffet was offered at a price of over ¥300.

📖 Overall Thoughts

Qiu · Restaurant fits my stereotypical impression of hotel restaurants: looks fancy, but lacks substance.

👍 Pros:

Great environment, stylish decor, and polite service—suitable for business meals or entertaining guests.

👎 Service Issues:

1️⃣ Many dishes on the menu were unavailable

2️⃣ Staff were unfamiliar with set-menu ordering rules

3️⃣ Ordered Set A but received Set B

4️⃣ Requested no cilantro, but it was still added

(Since the hotel hasn’t been open long, these hiccups are somewhat understandable.)

Looking forward to visiting Qiu · Restaurant again in the future.

... Read moreI've been on a mission to uncover the best ways to enjoy Shanghai's incredible dining scene, especially when you have perks like the Amex Platinum dining credit! My recent visit to Qiu·Restaurant inside the Canopy by Hilton Shanghai Belfry Plaza was a perfect example of trying to maximize those benefits. It got me thinking about how we can all get more out of our luxury credit cards and hotel stays in this vibrant city. First off, let's talk about that Amex Platinum dining credit. It's fantastic to have a US$100 credit, but in a city like Shanghai, where prices vary wildly, it's crucial to be savvy. My personal tip? Always, always confirm the exact terms with the restaurant or hotel reception beforehand. I've learned that sometimes, as I found at Qiu, these credits might not combine with ongoing local promotions, like a set menu deal on Meituan. So, a quick call or a chat with the staff upon arrival can save you from an unexpected bill. Also, don't forget to inquire about the exchange rate they use for the US$100 credit – it can make a difference! Beyond the dining credit, remember to check for other Amex Platinum benefits that might elevate your Shanghai trip, like potential hotel status upgrades or access to airport lounges, making your entire travel experience smoother. Speaking of the Canopy by Hilton Shanghai Belfry Plaza, it's more than just the home of Qiu·Restaurant. Canopy hotels are known for their local, boutique feel, aiming to immerse guests in the neighborhood's culture. While my focus was on dining, I noticed the hotel itself has a very stylish and modern vibe, making it a comfortable base. Its proximity to Shanghai Legoland might make you think it's exclusively for families, but it offers a convenient location for exploring other parts of Shanghai too, especially if you're looking for something a bit outside the bustling downtown core. Public transport connections are usually robust in Shanghai, so researching the nearest metro station from the Belfry Plaza can help you navigate quickly and efficiently. Dining in Shanghai, especially at a place like Qiu, can be an adventure. My experience highlighted some common challenges in high-end establishments – like menu items being unavailable or orders getting mixed up. Don't be afraid to politely clarify with the staff. Most places, especially in hotels, are eager to provide good service. If you're looking for specific local flavors, remember that dishes like the "Tomato & Potato Braised Beef Brisket" are comfort food staples, and a "Fried Pork Chop" is a classic Shanghainese snack. While Qiu offers a refined take on these, you can find incredible versions across the city at various price points. Always keep an eye out for what's seasonal and fresh, and don't hesitate to ask for recommendations from the staff – they often have hidden gems or daily specials that aren't prominently featured. By being prepared and a little bit adventurous, you can turn any dining experience in Shanghai into a truly memorable one!
