Ume NYC Restaurant Review

the prettiest sushi art at this unique japanese spot in brooklyn ✨

save for your next date night! it is such a unique dining experience. nothing like any other omakase or sushi experience ive had!

@ume.williamsburg makes sushi eating an art. The restaurant itself is minimalistic with a patio garden seating area. You are asked to take your shoes off and wash your hands when you enter, and you sit on the floor on cushions as a part of the dining experience.

Their most popular sushi signature set is so pretty and it comes with a dish of 9 exotic seasonings from around the world. The concept is simple, you make your own handrolls with the sushi piece, sushi rice and nori rice they prepare for you. It is a very interactive experience, because you can try to experiment different flavor palates using the seasonings. a great date night idea, my bf and I had so much fun! I also loved the aesthetics of the place <3

pro tip: patio can get very warm in the summer, I recommend booking early time slots and staying inside with AC.

- iced cucumber yuzu drink - soooo refreshing

Ume Japanese Restaurant
2023/8/15 Edited to

... Read moreIf you're on the hunt for a sushi experience that goes beyond the ordinary, Ume Williamsburg in NYC is an absolute must-try! I've been to countless sushi spots, and this one truly stands out, especially if you're looking for something interactive and aesthetically pleasing. It’s definitely not your typical omakase, but rather a unique journey into personalized sushi creation. The moment you step into Ume, you're greeted with a serene, minimalistic ambiance. The request to remove your shoes and wash your hands before settling onto floor cushions immediately sets a unique, intimate tone. It’s an experience that makes you feel instantly connected to the Japanese tradition of dining. My personal favorite spot was definitely the patio garden seating – there’s something magical about enjoying beautifully crafted sushi in such a tranquil outdoor setting, as seen in the overhead view of two signature sushi sets laid out on a wooden table. Now, let's talk about the star of the show: their signature sushi set ($78). Forget pre-made rolls; here, you're the artist! You receive a stunning platter of various sashimi pieces – think colorful tuna, salmon, and other exquisite fish – alongside perfectly seasoned sushi rice and crisp nori sheets. The real magic, though, lies in the accompanying dish of nine exotic seasonings from around the world. This is where the interactive fun begins. You pick your fish, add some rice, wrap it in nori, and then get to experiment with different flavor combinations. I loved trying a piece of salmon sashimi topped with a hint of green sauce, just like in the close-up shot. It makes every bite an adventure, and it’s genuinely a fantastic way to discover new flavor palates. My boyfriend and I had such a blast creating our own custom handrolls; it makes for an incredibly memorable date night! Beyond the signature set, the 'everything don' ($60) is another showstopper. The close-up of an 'everything don' bowl brimming with a variety of fresh seafood, including luxurious uni, glistening roe, and tender scallops, served over rice, perfectly captures its richness. And for a refreshing drink, the iced cucumber yuzu is an absolute winner, especially on a warm day. While it’s not an omakase where the chef dictates your meal, Ume Williamsburg offers a delightful alternative, giving you creative control. It’s less about a chef’s curated journey and more about your own playful exploration of flavors and textures. The detailed menu, which I saw someone reviewing, even illustrates various fish types and recommended seasonings, helping guide your culinary adventure. A quick pro tip: if you're eyeing the patio garden during summer, try to book an early time slot or opt for the indoor seating with AC. It can get quite warm out there, but the early evening glow is truly beautiful. Overall, Ume Williamsburg is more than just a restaurant; it’s a unique dining event that combines aesthetic beauty, delicious food, and an engaging, hands-on experience. If you’re in Brooklyn and looking for an unforgettable sushi spot, add Ume to your list!
