7 Holiday Touches For People Who Hate Clutter🎄

My mother-in-law is obsessed with decorating. I remember I was shocked for the first time I spent with my husband family. It was beautiful and I thought I’d decorate my house like that in the future.

But after we got a house, we feel overwhelmed by just putting away a Christmas tree. Especially my husband doesn’t like to put things on the attic.

Over time, we just have a habit for not getting lots of decorations and keep things simple.

If you’re like us who doesn’t like too many things it’s home. Here are some holiday decorations ideas that can save you from cluttering:

1. Small ornaments

2. Candles

3. Runner/ hand towels/ kitchen towels

4. A few tiny decorations

5. Small LEGO

6. DIY art piece

7. TV

... Read moreI totally get it – the idea of decorating for the holidays can feel more like a chore than cheer, especially when you think about all the boxes and the eventual cleanup! I used to dread bringing out our Christmas decorations because it meant digging through overflowing bins, finding broken pieces, and then having to put it all away again. But over the years, I've learned that decluttering isn't just about getting rid of stuff; it's about making space for more joy and less stress during the festive season. Before I even think about new holiday textile swaps or finding that perfect 'minimalist holiday magic' for our home, I start with a pre-decoration purge. This has been a game-changer for me! I pull out all our existing decorations and go through them with a critical eye. Do I love this? Does it still bring me joy? Is it broken or beyond repair? If it's a 'no' to any of those, it's time to let it go. It sounds simple, but it's amazing how many items accumulate that we just don't use or even like anymore. This way, when I'm ready to decorate, I'm only working with items I genuinely cherish, making the process much more enjoyable and efficient. Another tip I swear by for 'decluttering Christmas decorations' is mindful purchasing. It’s so easy to get swept up in sales and buy things we don't truly need. Now, I try to focus on quality over quantity. Instead of a dozen generic baubles, I look for one or two 'special, meaningful ornaments' that tell a story or evoke a cherished memory. This also applies to those tiny decorations. Instead of a huge collection, a few carefully chosen 'tiny decorations like mini birds or neutral accents' can make a bigger impact without overwhelming your space. And for the kids, those 'small LEGO sets' can be a fantastic, contained way to add festive charm without adding to the general chaos! When it comes to storage, clear bins are my best friends. Seriously! Investing in clear, stackable containers means I can see exactly what's inside without opening every single box. I also label everything clearly – 'front door wreath,' 'tree ornaments,' 'living room candles.' This not only saves time when setting up but also when packing away. It prevents that dreaded 'where did this go?' moment and ensures everything has its designated spot, preventing clutter from creeping back in next year. Finally, embracing the idea of using multi-purpose items or 'DIY holiday art prints' has been a revelation. Why buy dedicated holiday items if you can adapt what you already have? A beautiful throw blanket can become festive, or your TV can display a 'cozy Christmas fireplace scene' instead of requiring a physical fire setup. It’s all about finding clever ways to infuse holiday spirit without adding to the physical load. By adopting these decluttering habits, my holiday decorating has become a much calmer, more intentional experience, allowing us to truly enjoy the 'festive ambiance' without the stress of excessive stuff.

At first, I was confused by this. I was like OK what are we getting at? We’re getting at you don’t like a lot of stuff everywhere and boy a boy anymore. Christmas just throws up at you doesn’t it though. 😂
