... Read moreYou know, when I first started my acting degree, my head was filled with visions of Broadway lights and Hollywood sets, maybe even holding an Oscar someday! I spent years honing my craft – learning everything from method acting to stage combat, spending countless hours in dressing rooms, and dreaming of seeing my name on a clapperboard. The energy of the stage felt like home.
But then, life happened, as it always does. After graduation, the reality of the acting industry hit harder than I expected. It wasn't just about talent; it was about connections, relentless auditions, and often, juggling multiple part-time jobs just to make ends meet. While some of my peers landed roles or even considered pivoting to a more traditional 'corporate job,' I found myself on a different, equally demanding path: motherhood.
Becoming a stay-at-home mom was a choice I cherish, and I wouldn't trade my two little ones for anything. Yet, there’s always that little voice in the back of my mind, asking, 'What if?' What if I had pushed harder? What if I'd taken that one extra audition? It’s a common feeling, I think, for anyone who’s had a big dream and then found their life veering in an unexpected direction.
For a while, I felt a bit lost, wondering where that creative spark had gone. All those skills I learned – storytelling, character development, even just the confidence to be in front of people – felt dormant. But then, I discovered content creation. It started small, just making silly TikToks and videos with my digital camera, experimenting with camera settings, and sharing glimpses of my daily life. Suddenly, a new world opened up!
It’s not the Hollywood sign, but it's my stage now. I'm still performing, just in a different way. I get to express myself, connect with an audience, and use all those underlying creative instincts. It’s been incredibly fulfilling to embrace this new passion, capturing moments with my red hair flowing in the breeze while taking a selfie outdoors, or just sharing my thoughts from home.
To anyone out there with an acting degree, or any big dream that feels like it’s been put on hold, I want to say: your journey is valid. Don't underestimate the transferable skills you gained. The discipline, empathy, and communication abilities from an acting background are invaluable, whether you're navigating a corporate job, raising a family, or building a new creative endeavor. Your dream job might not look exactly like you imagined, but the essence of it – the joy of creation, connection, and expression – can absolutely find a new home. Keep exploring, keep creating, and don't be afraid to let your dreams evolve.
