period talk hiding

5/8 Edited to

... Read moreFor a long time, many women have felt compelled to hide their periods due to social stigma and cultural norms, often reinforced by subtle cues in advertising and product design. One eye-opening example is the use of blue liquid in sanitary pad commercials, which many people have accepted without question, despite how unrealistic it is. Only recently have some brands courageously transitioned to using red liquid in ads, reflecting the true color of menstrual blood and fostering more honest conversations about menstruation. From personal experience, I can relate to the embarrassment and secrecy surrounding periods during my younger years. I would go out of my way to conceal pads and avoid talking about menstruation, fearing judgment or discomfort from others. It’s only with growing open discussions, like those in #periodtalk communities, that I began to feel more comfortable embracing this natural part of life. Interestingly, the cultural perceptions around menstruation are also heavily influenced by historical interactions and colonization. For example, before Western influence, some indigenous communities had different practices and attitudes towards women's bodies and periods, including minimal clothing during menstruation as a natural state. However, external forces introduced new clothing expectations and shifted norms, often attaching shame where there was none before. This highlights how deeply ingrained the shame around periods is and why it’s crucial to question and challenge outdated beliefs. For instance, some companies have started supporting these shifts by providing products and raising awareness among marginalized communities and tribes. Moreover, the physical disconnection caused by introducing synthetic materials or footwear that cuts off natural grounding can also metaphorically relate to disconnecting from natural bodily processes, like menstruation. Sharing these reflections and learning from diverse perspectives can empower individuals to feel proud of their bodies and periods, dismantle secrecy, and ultimately shape a society where menstruation is normalized rather than hidden away.
