🎙️Episode 25 Drunk Confidence vs. Sober Confidence

SoberFitGirl hosts—Kathryn, Merial, and Ewa—unpack how alcohol tricks us into thinking we’re more confident while actually amplifying insecurities beneath the drink. They share personal stories of how sobriety helped them uncover hidden low self-esteem and, more importantly, how they worked through it to build real confidence—the kind that doesn’t need a drink to feel “cool.”

The girls dive into the cycle so many of us know too well—you drink to fit in, feel fun, and loosen up, only to end up hating yourself the next day. Sobriety breaks that pattern and offers a chance to build lasting confidence that doesn’t come with regret.

... Read moreIt's a feeling many of us know all too well: that sudden surge of charm, wit, and fearlessness after a few drinks. For years, I chased that feeling, mistaking it for genuine confidence. I believed alcohol unlocked a more outgoing, interesting version of myself, the one I wished I could be all the time. But the truth, as I eventually learned, was that this 'drunk confidence' was nothing more than a temporary illusion, a flimsy mask that ultimately amplified my deepest insecurities. What I've realized on my sober journey, much like what we explore on the SOBERFITGIRL PODCAST, is that true self-esteem isn't something you can pour from a bottle. It's built from within, through consistent effort and self-awareness. For me, "Breaking the Illusion" meant confronting the uncomfortable reality that alcohol wasn't my social lubricant; it was a crutch that kept me from developing real coping mechanisms and self-acceptance. The morning after these confident nights often brought waves of regret, anxiety, and a profound sense of self-loathing, leaving me feeling even less capable than before. So, how do you transition from that fleeting, artificial boldness to a deeply rooted, authentic sense of self-worth? It starts with curiosity and compassion towards yourself. Begin by observing when and why you might be tempted to rely on alcohol for confidence. Is it social anxiety before a party? A fear of public speaking? Or perhaps just a belief that you're not interesting enough on your own? Identifying these triggers is the first crucial step towards disarming them. Instead of reaching for a drink in those moments, try implementing small, sober strategies. For instance, before a social event, practice some mindful breathing exercises to calm your nerves. Prepare a few conversation starters or questions to ask others – shifting the focus from yourself often eases self-consciousness. Engage in activities that genuinely make you feel good and accomplished, whether it's mastering a new fitness routine, learning a skill, or dedicating time to a creative hobby. These small wins, accumulated over time, build genuine confidence that no amount of alcohol can replicate or diminish. They prove to you, in tangible ways, that you are capable and interesting just as you are. True confidence isn't about being loud, constantly performing, or never feeling vulnerable. It's about knowing and accepting who you are, embracing your imperfections, and trusting your ability to navigate life's challenges with a clear mind. It's a journey of self-discovery and growth, one that's far more rewarding and sustainable when traveled with authenticity and sobriety. If you're tired of the 'drunk confidence' rollercoaster, know that a stable, authentic, and truly fulfilling confidence is waiting for you on the other side.

I started drinking before I was even 21 — 19 years old and already using alcohol as a way to escape. What started as “just having fun” slowly turned into blackouts, shame, and years of my life slipping through my fingers. I spent most of my college years numbing instead of growing. I barely reme
