How to Remove Keycaps & Switches

This 2-in-1 tool usually comes with a prebuilt keyboard. It can be a little intimidating to swap out keycaps and switches from a keyboard for the first time, but after some practice it is usually an easy task to full customize your mechanical keyboard. While this tool is quite common, I find it useful time and time again.

* Before removing switches, make sure your keyboard is hotswappable. This allows you to take out and swap the switches without soldering.

... Read moreHey fellow keyboard enthusiasts! If you're anything like me, you probably fell in love with mechanical keyboards for their satisfying feel and endless customization possibilities. But then comes the moment you want to change out those keycaps or even swap switches, and suddenly it feels a bit intimidating. I've been there! My first time attempting it, I was so worried I’d break something, but after a few tries, it became second nature. This guide is all about sharing my experience to make your journey smoother. So, why bother removing keycaps and switches? There are a few great reasons! Maybe you want to give your board a fresh new look with a custom keycap set, or perhaps you're diving into the world of different switch types to find your perfect typing feel. Cleaning is another big one; sometimes dust and crumbs get under those caps, and a thorough clean can make a huge difference. Or, if a switch is acting up, swapping it out is far cheaper than buying a whole new keyboard. Let's start with keycaps. You’ll typically use a keycap remover tool, often featuring metal wire prongs. The trick is to gently hook the wires under the keycap on opposite sides. Once you have a good grip, pull upwards with steady, even pressure. Don't yank it off forcefully, as this could damage the keycap stem or the switch underneath. I find a slight wiggle helps, but the key is consistency. For larger keys like the spacebar or Shift, you might need to apply a bit more pressure, but always be mindful not to twist. Now, for switches – this is where the "hot-swappable" detail becomes crucial! Before you even think about pulling a switch, confirm your mechanical keyboard actually supports hot-swapping. If it doesn't, you'll need to desolder the switches, which is a whole different (and more complex!) operation. Assuming you have a hot-swappable board, you'll use the switch remover tool, which usually comes as part of that handy 2-in-1 keyboard tool. This tool has two small prongs designed to fit into the tabs on the top and bottom (or sides, depending on the switch) of the switch housing. Once the prongs are engaged with the tabs, gently squeeze them to compress the clips holding the switch in place. Then, while still squeezing, pull the switch straight up. It should come out relatively easily if the clips are fully compressed. If it feels stuck, don't force it; re-seat the tool and try again. The goal is to avoid bending the delicate pins on the bottom of the switch. My personal tip: always have a small tray or container ready to keep your removed keycaps and switches organized. There's nothing worse than a lost switch! "But what if I don't have a tool?" That's a common question, and while I always recommend using the proper 2-in-1 keyboard tool for safety and ease, there are some makeshift methods if you're in a pinch. For keycaps, you might be able to carefully pry them up with something thin and sturdy, like a credit card or a very small, flat plastic pry tool. However, this significantly increases the risk of scratching your keycaps or, worse, snapping the plastic stem. For switches, it's even trickier without the dedicated switch remover tool. Some people attempt to use two small flathead screwdrivers or tweezers to compress the switch tabs, but this can easily damage the switch housing or the PCB if you slip. My advice? Invest in the inexpensive tool; it saves a lot of potential headaches and damage in the long run! After you’ve removed a keycap, you'll see the switch stem exposed, ready for a new cap. When you take out a switch, you’ll reveal the hot-swap socket on the PCB. It’s a satisfying sight, knowing you have full control over your board's feel. When reinstalling, make sure the switch pins align perfectly with the holes in the socket before gently pushing down. A slight click should confirm it's seated properly. If it doesn't go in smoothly, never force it, as bent pins are a pain to fix. Ultimately, customizing your mechanical keyboard is a rewarding experience. It might feel a bit daunting at first, but with the right tools and a gentle approach, you'll be swapping keycaps and switches like a pro. Enjoy making your keyboard truly your own!
