The City View ✨🏙️

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a bit more about how I tackled this one-point perspective city view, especially since so many of you are curious about drawing buildings looking up. This technique can seem a bit tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it opens up a whole new world for your urban sketches! First off, if you're wondering 'what is one-point perspective?', it's essentially a drawing method where all parallel lines receding into the distance converge at a single point on the horizon line. Traditionally, this vanishing point is on the horizon, showing things moving away from you. But for this piece, as you saw, I shifted my vanishing point to the sky to really emphasize that feeling of looking up at towering skyscrapers. It's an awesome trick to create a dramatic, expansive city perspective drawing. Here’s how I approached drawing these NYC-inspired skyscrapers from a low vantage point: Establish your vanishing point (VP): Instead of placing it on a horizontal line, imagine it high up in your sketchbook, towards the top center. This is where all the vertical lines of your buildings will appear to converge. Draw your first building: Start with a simple rectangular form closer to the bottom of your page. This will be one of your closest buildings. Remember it's a blue ink pen drawing, so planning is key! Extend lines to the VP: From the corners of your first building, draw faint lines leading up to your vanishing point. These will guide the angles of your buildings as they recede upwards. Add more buildings: Use these guidelines to construct more buildings. The closer they are to the VP, the narrower they'll appear. Think about varying heights and widths to make your city view dynamic. I love how the tall buildings really make you crane your neck! Details and texture: Once your basic forms are down, start adding windows, ledges, and architectural details. Since I was using a blue ink pen, I focused on hatching and cross-hatching to create depth and texture, especially on the skyscraper fronts. Foreground elements: Even though the focus is looking up, adding a hint of ground or lower structures can help ground your perspective. Just a few simple lines can make a big difference.
