Hidden gems of southern Washington🌲🥾📸

... Read moreAs someone who absolutely loves to explore Washington, I'm always on the hunt for those secret spots that truly make the Pacific Northwest magical. Southern Washington, in particular, is brimming with hidden gems that often get overlooked, but trust me, they’re worth every bit of effort to find! I wanted to share some of my recent adventures and discoveries, hoping to inspire you to carve out your own path. My journey often starts in a misty forest, chasing the sound of rushing water. There's nothing quite like stumbling upon a cascading waterfall after a peaceful hike through towering, moss-covered evergreen trees. The air is crisp, and the scenery feels straight out of a fairy tale. These are the moments that define PNW exploration for me. I've found that some of the most beautiful streams, where you can dip your feet in cool, clear water over dark rocks, are just off the beaten path. One of my absolute favorite unique finds was the Cedar Creek Grist Mill. Tucked away and looking like a postcard, this old wooden grist mill stands proudly beside a flowing creek, especially vibrant when surrounded by autumn trees. It’s not just a beautiful photo op; stepping inside is like stepping back in time. It’s a true slice of history amidst nature’s grandeur. And speaking of grandeur, you simply cannot visit Southern Washington without experiencing Skamania County. The views are absolutely breathtaking. I recently hiked up to Beacon Rock, and let me tell you, the wooden walkway built into the cliffside offers unparalleled vistas. You’re treated to a panoramic scenic overlook where the Columbia River winds through a lush, forested valley under an expansive sky. It’s a powerful reminder of nature's artistry and the perfect spot for reflection. Further west, Clark County also offers its own unique charm, especially around Washougal. The serene river there perfectly reflects the sky and lush evergreen trees lining its banks, creating a peaceful haven. It’s an ideal spot for a leisurely walk along the riverbanks, picnicking, or even a quiet afternoon of kayaking. For anyone keen on EXPLORING WASHINGTON's hidden gems, here are a few tips I've picked up: Timing is Key: While beautiful year-round, spring and fall offer incredible colors and fewer crowds. Summer is great for water activities, and winter brings a different kind of misty magic. Layer Up: PNW weather can be unpredictable. Always bring layers, a rain jacket, and sturdy waterproof shoes. Leave No Trace: These spots are special, so let's keep them that way! Pack out everything you pack in. Bring Your Camera: With so many stunning waterfalls, river vistas, and unique historical sites, you'll want to capture every moment. Don't forget that "golden hour" light! I hope this little guide helps you uncover some of your own favorite Washington hidden gems. There's so much natural beauty waiting to be discovered just beyond the usual tourist trails. What's your favorite secret spot in the PNW? I'd love to hear about it!

Does 5 mile at Point Defiance count as a hidden gem now? 😆 Considering that no one new to the state will ever get to experience it the way everyone else did before they shut it down to driving. Still beautiful to walk through in the spring and summer, though. 🥰

Southern Washington’s most exciting summit? 🥵 I think Silver Star might be it.
This wildflower-covered ridgeline gives you 360 views of almost every Cascade volcano—from Hood to Rainier—and this year, the bear grass is going off in a big way. 😍
It’s steep, it’s rocky, and it’s worth every step.

Would you solo this?? 😅
Because I probably should not have… my mom’s gonna be so mad when she sees this. Random forest road? Check.
Rainy and icy? Check.
Sketchy edge of a 200’ cliff? BIG check. Finding an insanely gorgeous, completely unmarked waterfall…
Worth every questionable decision. 🌧️❤️
