Professionalism is a one way street

3/24 Edited to

... Read moreIn many workplaces, professionalism is often talked about as a standard behavior expected from everyone. However, through my personal experiences, I've noticed that professionalism can sometimes feel like a one-way street, especially when situations become uncomfortable or when individuals choose to prioritize their own well-being. The OCR-extracted insights highlight a harsh reality: "They preach professionalism until they don't have to practice it." It's common to show up on time, communicate clearly, and remain respectful—yet, the moment someone decides to assert their needs or step away from toxic dynamics, the warmth and respect can disappear. This often signals that the professionalism shown was more about convenience than genuine mutual respect. For instance, when I encountered a challenging leadership situation, I maintained a calm and professional demeanor, hoping to foster collaboration. But when I needed to set boundaries for my mental health, I faced cold responses and distancing behaviors. It became clear that professionalism wasn’t reciprocated unless it suited others’ agendas. True professionalism means upholding respectful communication, clear collaboration, and timely behavior regardless of personal dynamics shifting. It’s about consistency—not just when it's convenient or aligned with control but even when it challenges comfort zones. Understanding this can shift workplace culture positively. Leaders who demonstrate unwavering professionalism inspire teams to do the same, which drives career growth and creates a supportive environment for adult learning and development. From experience, I recommend reflecting on whether the professionalism you practice is truly mutual. If it feels one-sided, it might be time to have open, honest conversations about workplace culture norms and encourage leadership to embody the standards they preach.

True professionalism isn’t loud. It doesn’t need to belittle, intimidate, or assert dominance to prove competence. The most skilled people stay humble because their confidence isn’t fragile. They teach instead of gatekeep. They guide instead of posture. They create safety instead of hierarchy.
