Some workplace expectations became so normalized that people stopped asking whether they actually make sense.

Not every “professional standard” is healthy, productive, or necessary.

Sometimes adults are expected to tolerate things that would feel unreasonable in almost any other part of life.

... Read moreIn my experience navigating various office environments, I've seen firsthand how many workplace expectations become so ingrained that no one stops to question their real value. For instance, the old adage that being visibly busy equates to productivity often leads to unnecessary stress and burnout. Instead of focusing on actual outcomes or quality of work, employees feel pressured to appear constantly occupied—sometimes working long hours without meaningful results. Another widespread but questionable norm is the expectation for employees to always be available, blurring the lines between work and personal life. I've found that this approach rarely leads to better outcomes and more often results in exhaustion being mistaken for commitment, which is neither sustainable nor healthy. Moreover, the concept of "professionalism" can sometimes suppress genuine emotional expression, forcing people to hide their feelings and concerns. This emotional suppression can hinder creativity, communication, and overall job satisfaction. Based on my observations, workplaces that prioritize optics—such as strict adherence to outdated rules or rigid hierarchy—over effectiveness tend to cultivate environments where employees feel undervalued and disengaged. In many cases, adults are also expected to seek permission for basic autonomy, which can undermine trust and reduce their ability to make quick, confident decisions. Reconsidering these norms and focusing on respect, clear communication, and valuing worker well-being can transform corporate cultures in positive ways. Ultimately, I've learned that "normal" workplace practices aren't always healthy or productive. Embracing change and questioning established norms can lead to a more balanced, impactful, and fulfilling professional life.
