That moment taught me a lot.

A job can appreciate your work and still not care about your life.

A job can depend on you and still not protect you.

A job can call you “valuable” and still treat your emergency like an inconvenience.

That does not mean you should stop caring about your work.

It means you should stop confusing work with loyalty, love, or identity.

Your job is allowed to have needs.

So are you.

#WorkplaceCulture #ToxicWorkplace #CareerLessons #EmployeeWellbeing #ChooseYourself

... Read moreFrom my own experience, I’ve realized that many workplaces outwardly appreciate employees’ efforts yet fail to support them in times of personal crisis. For instance, when I once informed my employer about a family emergency, their indifferent response made it clear that despite being called "valuable," my personal struggles were seen as inconveniences rather than legitimate concerns. This taught me a crucial lesson about the difference between being relied upon professionally and being genuinely supported as a human being. A healthy work environment respects both your professional output and your personal needs. Unfortunately, many companies blur this line, expecting unwavering commitment without offering reciprocal care or protection. It’s important to separate your identity and loyalty from your job role. While dedication is admirable, intertwining your self-worth exclusively with your job can lead to burnout and emotional distress. Setting firm boundaries and acknowledging that your job has needs—but so do you—is essential for long-term well-being. Choosing yourself means prioritizing your mental, physical, and emotional health even when workplace culture discourages it. This doesn’t mean neglecting your responsibilities, but rather recognizing that a job is not a substitute for self-care or support systems. Sharing such experiences helps to foster awareness about toxic workplace patterns and encourages others to advocate for healthier environments where employee wellbeing is more than a hashtag. Remember, workplaces should value you as a whole person, not just as a contributor to their bottom line.
