When employees must constantly prove they are working, productivity can become a performance instead of an outcome.

Excessive status updates, monitoring, meetings, and time tracking may create the appearance of accountability while quietly wasting time and damaging trust.

Measure meaningful results—not how convincingly someone looks busy.

... Read moreIn today’s work environment, I’ve noticed firsthand how the pressure on employees to constantly prove they’re working can backfire. In some teams I’ve been part of, frequent status updates and relentless tracking make employees feel like they’re under a microscope. This not only interrupts their workflow but also creates unnecessary stress. From my experience, when employees spend more time documenting their activities than doing the actual work, productivity inevitably drops. This practice feels less like accountability and more like micromanagement, which quickly erodes trust between staff and leadership. In contrast, teams that prioritize clear expectations and open communication seem to perform better because employees feel trusted and empowered. I’ve also seen how unnecessary meetings and constant activity monitoring can fragment the workday. It’s exhausting to switch between actual tasks and reporting modes, and this fragmentation diminishes overall efficiency. Instead, focusing on the results—what employees actually accomplish rather than how busy they appear—drives greater satisfaction and productivity. Building a culture that values outcomes over appearances means leadership must trust their teams more and resist the urge to micromanage. When employees know their contributions matter and they aren’t just checked on for the sake of it, workplace morale improves. In sum, avoiding constant surveillance and shifting from performance as a show to productivity as an outcome can transform how work gets done and how teams thrive.
