... Read moreFrom my own experience working in various team environments, I’ve noticed how crucial respect is in motivating employees to go beyond their basic duties. When leaders genuinely value and acknowledge contributions, employees often feel inspired to contribute extra effort voluntarily. However, I have also seen scenarios where this goodwill was taken for granted. In one company, the culture shifted from occasional teamwork to an unspoken rule that everyone must stay late or pick up extra tasks regularly. This expectation turned goodwill into an obligation, which led to frustration and decreased morale. What I’ve learned is that goodwill should be earned and nurtured, not assumed. Leaders need to recognize when generosity is voluntary and when it is becoming a default expectation that employees feel pressured to meet. Open communication about workload and work-life balance is key to sustaining positive employee experience without risking burnout. In practice, managers can implement systems that regularly check in on employee well-being and encourage setting healthy boundaries. This reinforces that while teamwork and extra effort are valued, the organization does not rely excessively on employee generosity as the foundation of productivity. Balancing appreciation and clear expectations fosters a workplace culture where goodwill remains a positive force rather than an exhausting obligation. This approach benefits both management and employees, ultimately supporting sustainable work performance and leadership effectiveness.
