Your First Plant? Start With These!

When I got my first plant, I was nervous I’d kill it within a week. I chose a pothos because everyone said it was “unkillable.”

(Spoiler: it almost died because I overwatered it and kept it in the darkest corner of my room 🫠)

But once I figured out that it preferred dry soil and brighter light, it started to grow like crazy, and now it’s one of my favorite plants to propagate and gift.

If you’re a new plant parent or scared to start, here’s my advice: pick a forgiving plant like pothos, snake plant, spider plant, peace lily, or ZZ plant.

Get into the habit of checking the soil before watering. Give it light, a little love, and a name if you want 💚

Plants aren’t about perfection, they’re about growth, both yours and theirs! You got this 🌿

... Read moreI totally get it – that initial fear of becoming a plant serial killer! When I first started my plant journey, I felt overwhelmed, but honestly, it's all about picking the right partners in green. After some trial and error, I've found that certain plants are incredibly forgiving and will actually want to grow for you, even if you're a complete newbie. Let me share some more insights into my favorite beginner-friendly plants and how I’ve helped them truly flourish. Pothos: My Go-To for Lush Growth You know, my Pothos was the plant that taught me the most. While the original post mentions it forgives neglect, I’ve learned that giving it a little extra attention can make it explode with growth. To make your Pothos grow faster and get those beautiful long vines, ensure it gets bright, indirect light. Mine absolutely loves a spot near a window (but not direct sun!). I also make sure the soil dries out completely between waterings, and then I give it a good soak. During the growing season (spring and summer), I feed it a balanced liquid fertilizer every couple of weeks. Plus, propagating cuttings in water doesn't just give you new plants; it also encourages the mother plant to become bushier and more vibrant! Snake Plant: The Unkillable Statement Piece & Its Friends Oh, the trusty Snake Plant! It truly lives up to its "unkillable" reputation. I’ve gone on vacation for weeks and come back to a happy Snake Plant. The key, as I learned, is not to overwater. I stick to watering mine every 3-4 weeks, or even less in winter, making sure the soil is bone dry. If you're wondering "what plant is this" that can handle anything, it's definitely the Snake Plant. And for those curious about "snake plant companions," I've found a few plants that make great neighbors. Because Snake Plants are so low-maintenance and drought-tolerant, they pair well with other plants that prefer similar conditions. I love grouping mine with a ZZ Plant or a sturdy succulent like a Haworthia. They all appreciate bright, indirect light and infrequent watering, creating a harmonious and easy-to-care-for display. A Peace Lily can also look stunning nearby, though it will need more frequent watering, so be mindful of its specific needs. ZZ Plant: Slow and Steady Wins the Race My ZZ Plant is the definition of low-effort, high-reward. While it grows slowly, its strong, waxy leaves are almost impossible to damage. I literally water mine once a month, sometimes even every six weeks, especially in lower light conditions. It’s perfect for that forgotten corner that still needs a touch of green. Don't worry about trying to make a ZZ Plant grow "faster" in the traditional sense; just give it consistent, minimal care, and it will steadily produce new, beautiful stems. Spider Plant: The Prolific Propagator Spider Plants are so much fun because they just keep giving! They bounce back incredibly fast, even if you forget about them for a bit. I find that placing mine in bright, indirect light and watering weekly keeps it super happy and encourages it to produce those adorable "spiderettes" that hang down. Gently pinching off older, yellowing leaves also helps direct the plant's energy towards new growth, making it look fuller and healthier. Peace Lily: Your Dramatic but Rewarding Friend The Peace Lily is truly a plant with personality! When mine starts to droop dramatically, I know exactly "what plant is this" that needs water ASAP. It's a fantastic indicator of thirst. After a good drink, it perks right back up within hours, which is incredibly satisfying to watch. I keep mine in medium-low light and water it as soon as I see those leaves start to sag. Seeing its beautiful white blooms emerge is such a rewarding experience, making all its dramatic antics worth it! Boosting Growth for All Your Green Friends Beyond individual plant needs, there are general tips I’ve learned for "how to make it grow faster." First, ensure consistent light. Even low-light plants benefit from indirect bright light. Second, don't underestimate the power of proper watering – check the soil, don't just water on a schedule. Third, consider feeding your plants during their active growing seasons with a diluted, balanced fertilizer. Fourth, don't be afraid to prune! Trimming back leggy growth or yellowing leaves can encourage new, bushier growth. Finally, a little humidity can go a long way for many houseplants, especially during dry indoor months. Remember, every plant journey is unique. Don't be discouraged by a few struggles; learn from them, adjust your care, and enjoy watching your green companions thrive!

For the peace lily: do not change the pot! Or at least do your research… that’s how mine died 🥺
