5 easy ways to regulate your nervous system

5/15 Edited to

... Read moreRegulating your nervous system through balancing the root chakra can profoundly affect your overall well-being. From personal experience, integrating grounding Root Chakra yoga into my morning routine has been a game-changer. Just 10 minutes of gentle stretches and focused breathing helps lower my cortisol levels and increases serotonin and oxytocin, which improves mood and reduces anxiety. Coupling this with a mindful meal outside or near natural views enhances the feeling of safety, signaling the sympathetic nervous system to shift from survival mode to rest and digest. I also found that changing the lighting environment after 6pm makes a significant difference. Switching to only yellow or candlelight helps my body recognize that it's time to relax and recover. This simple change lowered my nighttime anxiety and improved my sleep quality. Avoiding negative news and scary content especially in the morning and before bed protects my nervous system from unnecessary stress. Since the brain operates on alpha wave frequencies during these times, exposure to such content can signal danger and increase cortisol, keeping me stuck in fight or flight mode. Another technique that felt surprisingly effective was hugging a tree for about 17 seconds. It sounds odd, but this action helped regulate my heart rate and nervous system, similarly to the effect of hugging another person. It reduced my cortisol levels noticeably and boosted oxytocin, giving me a calm, grounded feeling afterwards. These methods are practical, accessible, and support both nervous system health and chakra balancing. Incorporating them regularly can help anyone experiencing stress or anxiety find a natural path back to feeling safe, centered, and relaxed.
