Underconsumption Core: 20 year old kitchen edition

Underconsumption Core might be my favorite trend to hit TikTok this year. We are constantly being advertized and sold at. It’s nice to look at what you have sometimes and remember how great it is that you have just that one thing, or look at one object and realize just how many memories you have of it.

I will replace that kitchen table one day. It’s been there since my father in law bought the house 20+ years ago. We had so many meals around that table, played so many board games. My partner taught me how to play blackjack there. We moved that table aside so many times to play Throw Throw Burrito so we didnt crash into it. Ive burnt it, scratched it, left water marks. Our whole family sat around it and told stories of my father in law when he eventually passed. It may not be a Saarinen Tulip table like I’d love one day, or my fridge might not be a bespoke Samsung Smart fridge, but everything works, everything feeds me and keeps me comfortable, and I think its important to remember that and not replace things for the sake of a trend or because a video made you feel as though your home wasnt good enough. 🫶 #underconsumption #underconsumptioncore #anticapitalism #interiordesign #functionalhomes

... Read moreThe Underconsumption Core trend encourages us to rethink our relationship with our belongings, especially in the heart of our homes – the kitchen. Many have experienced the joy of cooking with family and friends, creating bonds over shared meals and laughter. As we navigate a society often driven by consumerism, it's essential to embrace the things that truly matter. From the stories told around a timeworn kitchen table to the sentimental value of a thrifted item, there lies beauty in the imperfections of our spaces. This shift in mindset aligns with the growing interest in sustainable living and minimalist design. It reminds us that a well-loved home can bring comfort and happiness, regardless of the latest trends. Each dent and scratch holds a story, urging us to cultivate a space that reflects our lives rather than fleeting aesthetic standards. Additionally, incorporating personal touches, such as decorated jars or fresh produce from a garden, enhances the unique character of your kitchen. Rather than just updating decor for the sake of social media validation, this movement encourages authenticity and a deeper connection with our environments. By nurturing these thoughts, we foster a culture of gratitude and appreciation, ultimately leading to more sustainable practices and heartfelt living. Embrace the essence of your treasured items and allow your kitchen to continue being a backdrop to unforgettable moments.
